pinion gears ? - 07.22.2006, 11:34 AM

I have Wond XL8 & strobe 51 5s lipo EMAXX. I have been running alittle warm w/ new set up Quark 125b. Just bashing around. Been running 18t & 20t. If I I gear way down in pinion say 15 or so would this help in genneral?. I do alot of sand dune hill climbs. My cvd were very dirty & binding, I have fixed that. Is the wond 8xl a Mod 1 5mm,1/8, or a 4mm.?
Thanks in advance.
Mark

First off, Brushless motors have a "sweet spot" so gearing way down will also cause it to heat up as will over gearing it. A 16 might be about right, but what are your temps? Also, the XL motors all have a 5mm shaft.

Very hot to the touch, The 125b shut down. Alot of this is due to the binding of Cvd. UE 6mm ,I have also installed hot bodies cvd booties. I believe I can use grease in there now.

Very Hot to the touch is relative. You really need a temp gauge to get the temps accurate. You can click not pretty for a thread that Batfish posted on motor, esc, battery temps

Thanks BrianG and Squee it's not pretty but the link works.

Both of you need to get out more. There is more to life than computers. lol. Brian are you ready to edit your speed calculator again? I would do it for you but again I'm not that geeky. Some info that I have foundpossibly incorrect is the 8xl motors are rated at2084kv instead of 1875. I'm talking about the Feigao motor whereas you have the wanderers. You set me straight in the past that they have the same ratings. And yes you are geeky too. Writing java scripts, knowing the values of diodes and there real function. I bet you even know the color codes for resisters. If the answer is "yes" then you are a geek. Which is good for all of us nongeeks lol Don't take geek as a bad thing it just means you are smarter at software, hardware and electonics. Hey if it wasn't for you guys the rest of us would be pushing our truck around the track. I might have to include Batfish in with you. His sig say that "Electronics run on smoke... if you let the smoke out, they stop working.
Only a geek would know what electronics run on beside batteries. Looks like I hijacked another thread. I'm going to have to stay off the computer as a punishment.

Edit: Mark, Sorry about the hijack. I just can't help myself Where do you find sand dunes in SF? Do you overheat on pavement/dirt/grass or just in the sand. Along with your CVDs the sand will drag far more than tall grass. Extra strain on everything. Have you tried paddles with any difference in temps? A 9xl or 10xl might be better for you if the sand is what you mostly run in.

OCEAN BEACH has alot of sand with good drifts running up the bluffs. It also has great surfing in fall & winter. I have been running paddles in rear, stock chevron in front. It is a fun place to run. Paddles in front just throws sand even more into the truck. I cover the pinion area w/ electrical tape with only the 8xl 5mm post coming out. it works
keeping sand out. Rear bearing I cover tape also. It climbs well. I think My cvd
UE 6mm were so dry they were binding pretty good, and created a really sticky drive train. I have fixed that. I also got HOT BODDIES savage bootie covers now. I believe I can put grease in there now & no dirt can get in.
On pavement this thing flies w all temps good.

But a 9 or 10 xl would do what for me. In sand I need not so much speed but torque. Longer run time would be good. The Apachee 5s 2 in parallel give me 20 minutes of real of hard running. I usually try to be safe as these batteries cost a bundle.,

Mark thanks for the info. I also plan on running in the sand some. The 9 or 10xl should run a little cooler with more torque and run time with less top speed. Where did you get the boots as I will probably need some and the most important question do you like the way they fit/seal? The sand really puts a bad drag on the drive train as you probably already figured out. I spend a lot of time in the sand .Mostly ATV's and my truck when it's not broken.

And now back to squee you're the only one I know that can edit someon elses post. That was pretty funny until I found out that I got punked by a 16 year old.My oldest boy is 16 that is what makes it so bad. Still funny though. Keep it coming. I can handle anything that you can thow out.

The boots came from Tower Hobbies. "Hot Boddies Rebuild Kit 61215" Mfg #61216 $6.69, set of 4. My local hobby shop ordered it for me. Also I was just burning up meltdown strobe pads until I removed the stock spring and replaced it with a few washers and really crank it tight, strobe 51 set up. I also run spyder 8.

They fit very good, Can probably put grease in there for a silky smooth set up. I am only just running them now. Time will tell but the fit is very good.

What would have more torque 9 or 10 Xl, What would be a good pinion size 16?

Actually, I would choose a 9XL. A 10XL will have more torque but a good bit less top speed. The 9XL with 5S should be about a 16 tooth pinion. Maybe a 18. Not really sure though.

go4gold, All the mods can edit post, edit threads, move threads, merge post, etc. Just gotta keep the forums nice and clean.
