Been running my 18T for a couple of weeks now with the new setup. I got the Quark 33A controller with the Dynamite C4 9200kv motor on a Maxamps 2100mah 3s. This thing goes pretty good but the motor gets a little warm for my likeing. Temps are running close to 200* on the high speed runs and about 25* less running normal. Controller temps are ok I think at about the 150 range.

I knew I could put a fan on the controller with no clearance issues but that's not where my heat issue lies, it's the motor. So because there is no room in these little cars I had no other choice but to mount it this way. As you can see, it actually hits both motor and controller. Attractive? No! Functional? Yes! Sometimes you gotta do what ya gotta do. I didn't take any readings yet but ran a few high speed runs yesterday and it didn't feel as hot to the touch.

Wow! A 9200KV motor on 3S?? I bet it's fast! And HOT!
(I use a 4200 on 2S for my tiny track, and a 5400 on 2S for anything else... both run cool with awesome runtime)

How about one of those heatsinks they sell for the mambas and such? It looks like they should fit!

Nice body mods, Johnny. Functionality first!

It doesnt look THAT bad, but im sure its hella fast!

I dont think that motor will last very long on 3s!


The problem with nitro's these days are that they arent brushless... LOL

I run a 8000Kv mamba and I used to have big problems with heat, and I have hit 200 deg before. First step was to get a heat sink on the can:

The model is an EFLM 1912. It fits perfect and is cheap. I have it on the motor so the fins hang out the hole in the bottom in the breeze. I had to bend the fins slightly to be able to get some clearance to set the mesh properly, but that's a very simple process. Looks like this:



However, even that didn't solve the heat problem. Turns out it was a very simple thing, I was still running the original metal-sealed bearings. They ran pretty good, but they were a bit crunchy. At the speeds these things run (see my recent vid in this forum) it takes very little resistance to build lots of heat. I replaced my stockers with a set from fullforcerc and my temps went WAY down. I can run hard as I want with the 3S now and after the run I can rest my finger comfortably on the heatsink for as long as I want. I doubt it's much over 110 - 120 now. Before, I would have burned myself. They have the bearing set on sale now, for $11...it's quite the deal.

The truck looks fine with the top on! And if it runs well, does it really matter?

Thanks for all the input guys.
I took it out today to test it, made a couple of low speed passes and was getting ready to do a high speed one. Drove it down about 75 yards or so and all of a sudden it started stuttering. I assumed it was just the reception of the stock radio at first but as I started to walk a little closer to it I noticed a nice cloud of smoke. Uh oh, is that smell of good ol electric smoke I smell?
Opened it up and there was a nice black spot on the side of the Quark. I wonder why this happened? I couldn't have more than maybe 7 or 8 packs run through this thing yet.
Any thoughts?

Probably a dud. I'd send it in.

But yea...a 9200 on 3S must be faster than hell...

My 6800 on 3S is already ballistic...and I have the ESC's timing advance on low and am geared pretty low considering. I may go up on the pinion if the motor keeps running cool (to reduce the torque, cause I spin out alot lol).

Have you radared it yet? I'd seriously go and try out in the "Worlds fastest speed challenge" in RCCA. You'd probably take home the title for fastest mini...

Funny you mention that, I had my wife standing next to me with the radar gun when this happened. She says in typical wife like fashion, "Are you going to run it or not? Is that smoke?"

I wouldve used the Mamba 25 esc.
