I think I just fried my 1/18 Mamba 6800 Motor - 12.30.2006, 12:32 AM

I was running in the snow and had use saran wrap to seal up my chassis. I came in after ~15 minutes (3S 1500mah Lipo's run forever...I think I've gotten like 40 minutes of full throttle before). Anyway...the motor was SO hot that it waws able to melt a pretty large chunk of snow and then boil it into vapor!!!

OOPS!!!

I took it for a run today and left the motor completely exposed. It ran cool (ambient temps ~10* F). It seemed to run fine, but I can't tell until I get some traction. Snow driving with a Mamba 18T mostly involves rally-like driving over ice and flat, packed snow).

So...is my motor fried? It seems ok while driving, but logically I would think it shoul be toast.

PS. Its awesome rallying around on the packed snow...I love the 4 wheel rooster tails...

If it runs, then it can't really be fried. Most likely the motor went through a loss of power from the rotor de-magnetizing due to excessive heat. But if it runs, it runs!

Yeah what MetalMan said. It' probably fine but even a light overheating in the future may fry it

Castle says that 200* should be the max for these little motors. So i'm thinkin 300-400* may be just a tad on the warm side?

He lives only like a mile or two from the Hobby People I work at, and he has stopped by. I think I offered him a discount on the $25 Duratrax one, which would bring it down to something like $20, but he didn't seem interested at the time :). He can use mine when we go bashing next week.

Now that he wants one, you should charge him $30! :p

Eh...I'll go by the "If it runs, it runs" rule...the fact that its so fast I can barely control it above 1/2 throttle means I won't notice a drop in power unless its something like a 30% drop lol...

I know the motor was at a REDICULOUS temp...it melted a chunk of snow a little larger than the speed control and then boiled it off all within a second or two. It actually did that to like 10 peices of snow...so I know it was REALLY...REALLY...hot.

Funny thing is though, I was running it the other day. And even though my motor can was too hot to touch for more than a second or so, my rotor was still cool... any thoughts on this?
