Custom LVC does not work on MambaMax, MM owners please try it. - 02.02.2007, 07:33 PM

I'm not sure if this is already a well known fact and I'm just and idiot, but if I enable the custom LVC setting then my truck acts like it's in limp mode or something. All preset cutoffs work fine including the Auto Lipo setting. So far I have tested on 3 MM speed controllers and they all had the same problem. I would be interested to see if any of you have the same problem. Even if you do not have Lipo batteries, just set the custom LVC setting to say 6.5v or whatever you want. Then drive it and see if it feels gutless. The weaker the battery the more noticeable it is.

Maybe your battery is just weak? I'm pretty sure the LVC on my MM cuts out like it should since the MM uses a soft cutoff, and that's what I notice.

I'ts not a week battery because I have tons of batteries and it acts the same on all of them. Maybe this soft cutoff is my issue. I will play with it some more and try different custom cutoff settings and see what happens. Also I should mention that for 2s lipo I was using a custom cutoff of 7.2v. I realize that is a fairly high cutoff but it just seemed that anything under that just feels slow anyways so why run the batteries down lower when its to slow to be fun anyways. I will try a custom cutoff set at 6.2v and get back with you.

OK. I set the cutoff at 5.9v and ran a freshly charged IB3600 NiMh pack. With the cutoff set that low the problem definitely wasn't as bad, but the truck is faster with the cutoff disabled. It seems that this soft cutoff could be the source of it. Maybe it is too soft.

can i ask why your running a LVC on a NIMH battery pack.......nimh's put out lessvoltage per cell than lipo does....i believe

Have you tried a lipo with the setting on like 6.2 or 6.4 volts?
The 7.2 volts is right hi for a battery to stay above. At a good amp draw
the lvc kicks in and slows the amp draw.

ditto....turn off the lvc with nickel cells.

I only ran the LVC with my NiMh for testing just now. Normally I disable LVC for NiMh. Even with the LVC set to 5v I can notice a difference in performance vs LVC off. Is there seriously no one else that notices the same behavior with thier MM?

IMO there is nothing wrong with the MM... it's just telling you how low the volts are dropping on your batteries. It's not difficult to make a nimh drop to under 1.0v per cell.

Did you try 6.0V cutoff with a 2s lipo? That shoud feel much better than 6.5v.

Maybe it's possible that your MM isn't "calibrated" accurately so the voltage settings are bit off. But my guess is that it's just showing the batteries are dumping volts low enough for the VLC to kick in.

As Shawn P used to say, the LVC is a useful tool for limiting the power of the MM.

Yes that does seem to be the case. If I set the cutoff to 6v it seems to work pretty well for Lipo. I would have been doing it like this long ago had I had any clue it was causing problems. I do wish MM would give us an option to disable the "soft cutoff". I can see how it is useful tool for limiting power, but for my trucks I'd rather it just left the power wide open until it got to its cutoff point. At least now I know what the problem is.

Well if you had a hard cutoff then you would have lost all power instead of limiting it. That would have sucked even more.

Just set your cutoff to 3 - 3.1v per cell. I use a Novak Smart Stop on 2S wired to my BEC side pack on my HV-Maxx 4.5, and it cuts at 6.25V for 2 cells (its not adjustable). However, it seems to work very well. I get full power and then I get a few warnings (throttle blipping - almost unnoticable with so much power) and then it cuts off - all the while a led starts flashing.

On my 18T, I run 3S Lipo with the cutoff set at 9V. It also runs quite well. Toward the end of the run it will start cutting off under full throttle, and after another minute or two it will cut off completely.

I guess my point here is that you can use a lower voltage cutoff than like 6.5V for 2S.

7.2v cutoff for 2s Lipo is very high... These cells will drop to ~3.4v under heavy acceleration. Just don't run with the LVC any lower than 3v/cell with Lipo.

FWIW: I have my manual cutoff set to 3.1v/cell on my Jato (2s2p emoli cells) and it works fine.

If I keep that setting when using 6 x GP3300 cells, I do notice a difference in power. In my case, the GP cells must drop voltage more under load and either drops near or below the cutoff.

You cant judge by using Nicds or Nimh, the voltage drops way more under load and will easily trigger LVC.
