Another lsp-r conversion question

First off, Hi and thanks for the great forum.
Ok I finally got my hands on a LSP. I have a Hv-maxx powered e-maxx and I must say Im not impressed with it. I built it with what I thought was the best at the time (UE lightning, FLM bulkless and the HV-maxx plus other stuff). It now lives its life on the shelf.

So I dont want to be disappointed with the new truck. My pockets are not that deep, so I cant just blow money like its going out of style. I do plan on slimming down some of my collection, so I will have some extra funds.

I want a dependable set up with good speed. From other post Ive read, I was looking at maybe the MM with a 9Xl motor. But am unsure of the setup, is this a good route or can anyone recommend something better. If I do go this route, what type of batteries should I be looking for. I plan to make the jump to lipo. Which brings me to my next question.

I have an ICE charger, and see that everyone recommends balancing taps. What type do I need and where do I plug it in? Thanks in advance.

Personally, I'm not surprised you aren't happy with the HV setup. You seem to have a good truck, just not the best BL setup. As for the LSP, I think the 9XL and a MM would be a good setup. Whether you want to run 4S or 5S is up to you. The MM is safe on 4S, as well as 5S, but 5S is the most you can run on it. Personally, I wouldn't run it on 5S all the time. If you deside to run 4S, I would go for the 8XL, or 7XL for a little more speed, depending on if your concerned about runtime.

I would like a decent run time and as Im looking at the prices of 4s batteries right now. I may be able to only afford one.

Is the 7xl strong enough to push the lsp with good run times? Or am I going about this backwards? Are these similar to brushed motors (lower # the faster?).

I am also converting a LSP to brushless, and I ended up getting a 8XL to go with a MM controller. It was a compromise buy, since I have heard that the 7XL gets too hot and the 9XL and up motors aren't fast enough unless you put more cells on them (5S lipo or 14+ Nimh).
Do a search on LSP on this forumm and you can look through a few other build-ups. Also, look at the speed calculator in BrianG's signature to see what you need for the speed you want.
Balancing taps are used to make sure that each cell in the lipo pack have balanced volts. Each lipo pack is wired for balancing taps or may have them, and you may have to get an adapter to use them on the balancer of your choice.
I am putting 4S on my LSP and I have been looking at trakpower 4900 batteries as well as maxamps 8000 (same price, different performance). I would do a search on these battery names on this forum to see what everyonw has to say about them.
I know I had all these same questions, but thats what makes it an interesting and worthwhile hobby.

I'll be using 2 Trakpower packs in my LSP-R when it's converted. I'll be using an 8XL on a MM in one of them and not sure what motor to go with the MM in my other LSP-R.
