Truggy tires

I just converted a Losi Muggy. I don't know if you'd actually call it a Truggy, but I'm going to be racing it in truggy class. Anyway, as I said, this is my first truggy and I don't know anything about setting them up with tires.

What do you guys recommend? What I need to know is what is the difference among the different sizes and such. It has 420s on it now and they are really big. From what I've seen, truggies typically run something just a bit wider and taller than buggy tires. What are 40 series tires?

Any info would be appreciated.

Use one of the Pro-Line MTR tires, and you should be set. thats pretty much all you need to know for choosing a race tire lol...

The new proline tires include molded foams, depending on the track you choose the type of tire.

I am not too keen on the 40 series. unless the track is smooth'; otherwise the truck can be quite unpredictable in corners.

The proline MT/MTR tires offer great grip/handling.

I was looking at the Panther Boa tires. They look like bowties, but are narrower and a bit shorter. I completely forgot about the fact that proline includes the molded foams. Alhtough their tires are more expensive, that's about $15 that I won't have to spend to get decent foams.

Thanks for the input. Now, how about wheels? What I'm unclear about is the offset. I guess, what I need to know is what wheels would be appropriate for racing a truggy.

Oh, do the tires from Mike include the molded foams? The pic on the RC Monster site show regular foams with the tires.

i've been lookin into the muggy alot lately, found lots of info on www.lstforums.com.
what you basicly want is 17mm hexes instead of the stock 20mm ones.
most use mugen ones. need to shim them tough.
you can also use hpi, hotbodies, sportwerks, 8(T), hyper 8 and maybe even more.
since you have a sportwerks put those on the muggy.
then you can run NON-offset truggy wheels.
your truck will steer alot better that way and it doesnt really need offset wheels as it is lower C.O.G. then the lst2 its based upon.
if i had racetrack around here i'd run GRP gandini grips or cubics. they are premounts on 3.8inch wheels, they are quite narrow. work really well.(from what i read about them)
other wise you could run pro-line mtr's, on mugen (MBX5T) wheels or so.

Proline has just swithed all their tires to molded foams.. but there is a lot of old stock out there still. You would have to call and ask if he has the new ones.

My LHS has a few with molded foams but most of their stock is from the end of last year's race season so they are the old foam.

The 420 series are just 40 series with a 20mm hex pattern.
40 series tires are wider than maxx sized tires, they are generally 3.5 inches wide where maxx sized tires are 2.75 inches wide (bowties) and just a hair shorter (5.4 versus 5.5)
Is the general concensus to use maxx sized wheels and tires for 1/8 truggies? What are the costs/benefits to using these over the 40 series rims and tires? Here are a few:
Benefits of maxx sized tires: narrower, more variety of tread patterns, lighter
Benefits of 40 series tires: wider, more traction, more stability?

To tell you the truth, I liked the stock 420s. They provided plenty of traction. I may have even kept running them, but with the gearing available to me, I couldn't get the Muggy geared right for my setup and I was having horrible cogging problems. I'm running 10/46 with the bowtie MTs and the cogging is better. It only cogs when I mash from a dead, and even then it still isn't stripping spur gears, like it was before. I have a 9T pinion coming. I hope to alleviate the problem all together.
