revo motor questions - 05.27.2007, 04:02 PM

hey all,
i have been talking with BrianG for some advice with the E revo. i currently have a roller with batteries. ialready have the truck locked in second, and the traxxas CD with 100k oil. i am likeing the MMM but it isnt out, i also like the monster pro and a 8L feigeo motor, (same as in RCD). to be quite honest the HV is in my price range but dont really lik the Novak stuff.

i guess the question i am asking now is should i wait for the MMM or save up for the Monster pro and Feigeo 8L motor. i will also try to construct my own motor mount out of 6.5mm thick aluminm, similar to the rc monster mount.

gasshead, welcome to the forums!

Although I don't have a Revo, I had done a couple of truck conversions. Are you planning on staying with 12 cells? As a general rule, I'd stay away from the "L" can motors, especially for trucks. They tend to run hot. All Feigao motors are going to get hot sooner or later, but the L's do it sooner than later. If you are going with a Feigao motor, try to stick with the "XL" can motors.

Since it seems that you have a limited budget, there are a couple of things that I can suggest, and this is taking into consideration that the MMM is not out yet.

If you are going to stay with 12 cells, I'd go with a 7XL and a Mamba Max speed controller and external bec.

A better way to do it would be to bump up to either 14 cells or 4S lipo and go with an 8XL and the Mamba Max speed controller with an external bec.

If you got your idea of using the 8L from that mag article, that's fine; but many here have found that the L can motors just plain get too hot for extended running and have gone to the XL can motors. I, too, started out with the 8L, but that didn't last long. The XL can motors have more torque and can take more gearing. You'll be much better off with an XL can motor in a truck.

The Mamba Max speed controller, although only rated for 12 cells or 3S lipo, does very well on 14 cells or 4S lipo. You just have to use an external bec or battery pack to power the electronics. I have five Mamba Max escs and have never run any of them on less than 4S lipo. The only trouble that I had with any of them was when I tried to run them on 5S lipo.

Good luck with the mod.

thanks AAngel. i will probly bump to 14 cells in a little bit. i personally dont want to use a MM ESC because a friend has one on his 4wd buggy, and i dont like the way it drove. so you think i should shell out the 10 more bucks and go with an XL type motor. i will probly get help with my budjet after i sell the 3.3 2 headers and 2 pipes to a worker at the LHS. and could any one help with the dementions of the monster pro spedo?

here is anoter pic,

The MM seems to be a little finniky about what kind of motor works well. People here have run pretty much any 2 pole motor (Feigao, BK Wanderer, Lehner, Mamba Max motors, etc) with no trouble. However, this ESC doesn't seem to like the Neu motors, although there is suppposed to be a software fix for that in the future (apparently has to do with slotted rotors).

IIRC, someone ran a MM ESC with a large LMT motor on a CEN Genesis and they said it ran fine.

The regular XL motors are definitely a good bang for the buck! If running 14 cells, I'd go with 8XL or preferably 9XL.

By "monster pro", do you mean the Quark 125? If so, the dimensions are listed in the store. Also, you are probably going to want to add more heatsinking to it as it tends to run a little warmer than most ESCs, but the smoothness is VERY nice. There is a heatsink made especially for the 125B in the store, or you can fab your own - it depends on your specific layout really.

brian i guess i am talking about the quark 125...do you think the heatsink that can use the dual fans will work? i would like to put it where my receiver is infront of the batteries. i already removed the foam from that section, ans now my RX is where the throttle servo is suppose to be.

Yeah, that heatsink in the store is made specifically for the 125B and has spots to mount fans. I have never used that heatsink though since I made heatsinks specific to whatever design I was doing. And, as you may have read from my previous posts; I hate using fans. They're just one more thing to go wrong. I just feel a properly designed system shouldn't need them.

the only time i have had to use fans was on my rc18. but it might be because i am running a 1/10th esc with a 8 cell pack. i dont beleve i wil have a problem with overheating and if i do i will go look at some computer shops maby rob a heatsink from a video card. like i said earler i am mounting the ESC and UBEC where the receiver is in the pictures. i dont belece i will have a problem with this setup. i will probly be running a 8XL, or what ever will give me beter run time and more speed
