BL LST2 Conversion - gearing dilema - help. -
05.01.2007, 12:33 PM
Here is my setup - Maxamps 6S, 5Ah lipo, LMT 1950/7 motor, MGM 24/160 ESC, stock gearing with the stock 2 speed tranny.
Now, here is my dilema.
With a nitro engine, it made sense having the 2-speed, as those tiny engines have little torque at startup and the 2-speed helps them rev up faster for more low-end acceleration. But with the BL, low-end torque is only dependent on the batteries powering the system.
Since the conversion I have always had issue with the shift point and the 2-speed heating up during a bashing run. On the upshift, when the 2nd gear kicks in, it does so with almost enough force to flip the truck over unless I am careful. On the downshift, (especially if I am driving very close to the shift point) the shift back into 1st gear makes the truck press down really hard on the front springs - and I've even had the truck flip forward a few times. At the end of a few runs I have felt the 2-speed and the slipper and damn near got 3rd degree burns from the temperatures.
I have played with setting the shift point to a higher motor RPM and that was where I got the most heat - I now have the shift point set pretty low and that seems to work okay for the heat - but the lurching is still pretty harsh at the up or down shift.
That being said - does anyone have any thoughts on the best direction to go for a solution?
My thought is that a 1-speed conversion would be the best way to go. No more heat from the harsh up and down shifting and I am sure a lot of the heat is coming from the slipper absorbing some of the torque during the shift as well.
I am sure the 6S with the LMT motor has more than enough oomph to kick off the line with just the gearing of the 2nd gear. And this would smooth out the accelaration and deceleration a lot.
I have seen a bunch of postings here where people have done the 1-speed conversion, so if anyone reading this post has done this, please link me to a site that has all the parts (or a kit) to do the conversion and maybe what the steps are.
Thanks all!!
