Forgive me, but is that not the strangest setup you've ever seen? The pinion/spur have beeb completely removed, and the motor shaft now doubles as the input shaft with the 1st/2nd input gears attached to it.....:eek: No provision for gearing adjustments but from the video/log it seems capable of 50mph and 25 minute run times using lipo.
Looking at the motor it is no longer than a 540, but it is fatter around than a BigMaxximum- wonder what the ratings are.

Feel free to discuss/laugh/dismiss/be tempted.

That video was on the Traxxas forum recently, it was in the wheelie contest thread in the E-Maxx forum.

He also has a pic of it in the truck. I believe, I may be mistaken, that motor is used mainly in planes.

This was posted up here a while ago. I think general consensus is that its not really an ideal stup with having the motor tied directly to the drivetrain with no chance for stress relief like a in a slipper clutch.

I dont think anyone has tried one themselves to try it though. SO without firsthand experience knowone really knows. $199 doesnt seem that unreasonalbe for the setup to me. Comes with a tranny and a motor. Wonder what ESC is recomended.

If you read the write up on ebay, he says that his choice of motor doesn't work very well with the Mamba Max. He does say that he was using a Quark 80A controller. He says that you control the power by adjusting your battery configuration. He recommends 4S and says to watch the temps on 6S.

His method definitely reflects some out of the box thinking, but I'd prefer to have a slipper or some other form of stress relief. I'll bet I could break it. LOL.

AAngel, I'm sure you could break it! ;) Yeah, that looks like an outrunner motor, which has plenty of torque. Flight guys use them because they usually have a lower rpm limit and can direct drive the prop rather than go through a gearbox of some kind. Personally, I like the inrunners better because the coils are on the outside of the can and are easily cooled with a heatsink and/or fan. Plus, inrunners are easier to seal up to keep dirt out of them.

I figured it was a bit barmy, to say the least, but it certainly is different. 12 pole motor.... and people say 4 poles cause too much RF noise. I think I have everything sussed out now though:-

low Kv rating motor + 14 to 22 volts + esc rated between 80-150 amps = 30,000rpms & happy times.

high Kv rating motor + 14.4-16.8 volts + hvmaxx type rating esc = 40,000rpms = need to gear down alot & hot electronics

lowish Kv motor + 14.4-20ish volts + quark125b or similar esc = 30,000 -35,000rpms & good setup?
