I am SHOCKED. Insane power - 05.22.2007, 02:18 PM

I have been nitro guy trough my hobby and this brushless conversion is my first try and never known how it perform in real and now finaly i fixed my ESC and I took out my LSP. And what i can tell I AM SHOCKED!:026: I have no words. I even dont know what i feeling: exciting about that what i made it. Happy and same time Dissapointed :) about the power.
It have instant torque and torque is so high and drive even on grass i loosing controll with trigger ~30-35% drive on sand or some looser surface it spins way too easy. Ot tarmac 75-80% trigger is so scary becouse it gets speed allmost instantly and it wicked fast for me. ESC is heated up pretty quickly becouse i drived in 30-40% drigger.
Maybe it undergeared i dont know... Tommorrow if weather is ok i will go to the track to try it.
How you drive it on track?
My setup is:
Lighting Stadium PRO
Motor-Feigao 9XL
Gearing- 14/44
Battery- TrueRC LIPO 8KmAh 5S2P
BK 9920

Maybe buy 4S battery to keep it more under control?

tom, I'm running the same motor in my 8ight T. Although I won't say that you are overgeared at 14/44, you might be able to bring the esc temp down a bit by trying 14/46, or something similar with the 44T spur that you have for 4S. For 5S, I would say that the gearing is a bit high. For 5S, try 12/46 or even 13/46. It's still going to be crazy fast with more torque than you can handle.

As much as I've tried, I just don't see running 5S in a car or truck as practical. If you want to tame it down, try one of two things. Either go with a higher turn motor (I am now considering a lower kv motor for 5S), or just make the move to 4S, reserving 5S for when you just really want to go fast.

Get your trigger finger under controll, that's all i can say.. :)

Or set the EPA of the throttle to 65 percent. Your runtime will increase that way.

That initial look of :dft002: is some of the biggest fun w/ BL.
I go the LHS looking for parts for the Revo, guys ask what engine I have in it, tell them I have a BL motor, and you get the usual "eletrics are for n00bs" or "dude you should try the big boys toys(nitros)" or some other comments.

Then I bring the truck in, take 10 secs plugging it in and then let it rip in the parking lot. Usual comments after that is " holy $#%", altho you do get the diehards who get defensive and just say "its not real if its not smoking".

Whatever, as long as you are having fun. Welcome!

You'll just have to get used to the comments like that. When I hear something negative, I usually just don't say anything. Sooner or later, either on the race track or in a drag race, they wind up eating their words.

I stopped by my LHS today. There was a guy in there looking at the "hot" engines. I walked in and threw my 8ight up on the counter and the guy leans over and looks at it and says, "that's nice, but I like the speed of nitro." The guy behind the counter just laughed.

Oh, what they (the nitro guys) just don't know.

That's funny, yet kind of typical. Brushless is still kind of "black magic" to many.....except of course to the brilliant minds of "the RC-Monster Collective"!

.....can you tell that I just watched a Star Trek movie with my stepson where they battled "the BORG"????

HA HA HA We are BRUSHLESS......YOU WILL BE ASSIMILATED! RESISTANCE IS FUTILE!

....I think I'm losing it...gotta go!

its so much fun watching nitro guys when they see for their first time my maxx in action hurling gravel 20feet away :)
around here BL is getting more popular in 1/18 but not many big trucks around. there are few HV maxxes and few 8-9XL trucks
maybe e-revo will change that

Oh, I bet the comments are awesome! I'm on the verge of giving my brushless Dagger its first proper run down at the local park...and I can't wait to hear some comments and see some expressions! Some nitro guys know nothing of REAL power!

Tom255, you will get used to the new found power. It takes a bit of time, but you'll get accustomed to it...and then if you drive another nitro again, it'll just seem slow.:018:

I agree with aagel. 5s on the 9xl on the track doesn't seem to be that practical. I had that setup in my 8ight. Last week I finally went to a slower motor since I didn't want to buy new batteries again.

Hi,

I think 5S on 9XL is still ok if u gear it right. Looking at the KV rating of 9XL, it is 1853/v. Under load this is a little less. With a 5S pack, the motor would be spinning around slightly more than 30K rpm. This is ideal when paired with the stock gear ratio of the LSP which I think is 13/50.

Regards,
Joe Ling

Joe Ling, have you actually run a 9XL on 5S in an 1/8 scale vehicle? I know that it looks reasonable on paper, but in practice, it is just way too crazy for the track.

The problem is that when you gear down to attain a certain top speed, there is so much torque that you can't control the vehicle, no matter how careful you are with the throttle. Besides, the added weight of the 5S pack is no benefit on the race track.

I've tried it all. I have a good half a dozen Feigao motors laying around in assorted kv ratings. I've settled on the 9XL with the 4S lipo pack for the track.

At this point, if I had just listened to Glassdoctor, I could have saved myself a whole lot of time and money. Doing the math, my 9XL is only spinning at under 25,000 rpms; but that enough to smoke just about any nitro vehicle on the track, when geared 16/46. At 14/46, I'm just running with the fast nitro pack.

i plan on staying with the 5s but have gone to a 12xl (1390kv)in the buggy. I will be putting a nue in the truggy though. I haven't tried the 8 on the track since changing motors, hopefully I will be able to this week. running it at the house it has been running much cooler then the 9xl was and should still have enough power for the track.
