How to get Lehner rebuilt? -
01.09.2008, 09:27 PM
Hey. I was just looking at my savage getting it ready for a little make over and I pulled the motor and noticed that the bearings are feeling a little rough. Its a 1940/7. Most of the mounting holes in the front end are stripped out as well. I only have three good ones left.
Anyway I'm thinking its time to ssend this motor in to Lehner and let them do a tune up on it. Its over 3 years old and has ALOT of miles on it. I'm sure the windings and rotor are still fine, it just needs a new front cover with fresh screw holes and some new bearings.
Does anyone know where to send them in to have Lehner work on them? Who would I contact. I know Mike doesnt deal with them any more or I would have just sent it to him to send in and get it refreshed.
Any help is apreciated.
EDIT: Also any idea on what that kind of thing might cost?
I can't decide if its more fun

or break it...

If I were you, just have mike mill you a new, thicker front plate, and buy new bearings yourself and replace it. While its open you can take some compressed air and blow it out.

I have Mikes front plate on it now. Thats how its holing up this long. The thing is if I take the front plate off I will probably screw up the remaining good screw holes. They are the only place to grab it to unscrew the front and those front plates are on tight!
Plus.... Where would I get the bearings?

Dont mind the time right now really. In reality its not getting much use in the winter. I run mostly my buggies at the indoor track in the winter. If I do want to run the truck I have a 9XL I can toss in as a temporary untill it comes back.
If I knew where to get the bearings and front plate and all I would probably take a whack at rebuilding it myself, but where would I get it. I dont thisn the bearings are your run of teh mill avid bearings or anything. Maybee some avid ceramics?

Plus, it would probably take some time to get it there, and then have it serviced, and sent back..........

Well, BP has a point. You can have Mike machine you a new front plate all together, or e-mail Mike. In most cases, he'll be able to hook you up. Chances are he has a old Lehner laying around thats fried. The bearings you should be able to get form Avid or somewhere else, but if not, Mike should have them as well. If not, I know OffshoreElectrics.com has bearings for the Feigaos, which should work, as long as the OD is the same (should be).

Thanks for the link. I found those just a little while agow while I was digging around. Now I just need to find a new front plate.
Anyone have a toasted 19xx motor around that they would be willing to let go of cheap?

I'd be glad to help out jhautz - especially since we go a ways back Remember the XXX-4G+? Shoot me a PM if you would like my help and I'm sure we can work something out. My 1940 is basically an expensive paper weight right now.

I wouldn't use bearings with a rubber seal on those high RPM's. It will melt quicker than you can burp the ABC!
