Hey jzemaxx! Tire question..... -
05.02.2008, 01:21 PM
I know you made that ballistic speed machine and used the phaltlines. My questions are:
1) how do you like them? Are they good, bad, ugly?
2) what other street tires did you use? Thoughts?
3) Did you try any 40 series street tires?
Thanks in advance, I'm following your MMT project because I'm trying something similair with a Muggy, though not quite as fast!

The Phaltines are ok at best. Right now they are the best thing I can get, but not what I would call great by any means. I have had 3 blowouts already and one at over 70mph. Doesn't matter if they are taped, untaped and CA glued all the way around, its just a matter of time. I now have several spare tires and wheels. On my 100mph 1/7th scale buggy project I am really thinking hard now that running these tires is NOT a good idea. Bad part is their is NOTHING else out there that will work at these speeds except IMEX foams, but they are not legal in most speed challenges that are being organized by some folks I'm talking to now. They require a full rubber tire. I have tried a few 40 series tires and they all sucked, but they maybe one out there that will work, but if their is I have no idea about it.

We just need to create a "miniture-izer" and shrink a 1:1 Z-rated tire.

I wonder if they could make some plastic rims with a contour on the outside to fit regular rubber tires without the use of foam..... it would be a bumpy ride, but it would work awesome..

I would go for anything that doesn't balloon so badly.

Here is one of them that blew around 60-65mph.....luckily is was the right rear. This is the only one that stayed in once piece as well when it blew.

But, at least it would be rubber and meet the current guidelines.

yeah, I think the problem is that no one cares enough to make good tires, and not enough people are running monsters at these speeds! The tires I was looking at were the pro line road rages, and the losi street tires. Did you try either of those? I've used road rages in 1/8 buggy and wasn't thrilled, so i expect the same here. I also think that soft M2 compound will be useless at these speeds, as it was limited w/ my nitro buggy.
Are the phaltlines really soft too?
Also, you may want to check out OFNA's monster truck wheels and tires. They don't say what size they are, so we'll have to find out. I'm gonna call on monday to see, and report back. I liked my OFNA street tires for my nitro buggy.

I have not seen the OFNA monster truck tires and wheels. The Phaltlines are soft but not as soft as the road rages. I am still looking, but no luck yet.

normally a tire blows because of imbalance; what's the deal with these phaltlines? is there moulded foam in there or 'just' foam?

Just foam, and its not blowing due to imbalance. Its just shear outward forces that are ripping them apart.
