tape your inserts not your tires? - 05.07.2008, 11:45 PM

I talking to the hobby shop about which of the molded foam insert to get for my new SUT's standard bowties and he swears up and down that it works great to do a loose double wrap around the foam or molded insert and then put that in the tire instead of taping the tire, swears its less likely to come apart on you and works the exact same, i did watch his truggy run and could tell his tires were taped but he corrected me and said it was the foams, has anyone else seen this i thought everyone turned the tires inside out and actually taped the tires?????

I think he was messing with you. The centrifugal force would still stretch the tire out of shape if it weren't taped. Or, maybe he just drives slow...

I use 2 layers of duct tape on the insides of my speed hawgs and I swear I could go 100MpH and they wouldn't deform!

X2 - he's wasting his time just wrapping the foam.

So what type of tape do you recommend as being best? I could see some 200mph duct tape as being really good - but how does it hold up over time, say a year down the road when the glue starts to dry out?

Hah!

Good point......

Seriously though, I do get different tires for different surfaces - my bowties aren't going to be used to boogie around a parking lot - I have some on road tires that last a good while (the Anacondas) yet I don't always run the car on asphalt so they tend to last a while.

I just use a "good quality" duct tape. 3M or Gorilla Tape brands work great. You could also try Contact adhesive + Fiberglass mat. I haven't done this but it seems more reliable than duct tape.

his tires didnt ballon, they swelled up maybe a 1/4 inch by the end of the LONG front straight, but he was serious, i called and asked him if he was pulling my leg, but he said if the insert fills the tire good (such as the nice molded foam ones) you just tape the insert and then with the insert being double taped it wont be able to swell or narrow up any and in wont let the tire narrow and swell up, in kinda makes since but hey you could always tape both...
