1/8 truggy or crt.5 / mayhem st? What would work best? - 08.28.2008, 01:36 AM

I was thinking about doing a brushless buggy conversion but ultimately I want to put some taller/wider tires on it, so started thinking a truggy would be a better base.

I have a MM powered traxxas rustler now (on 3s) and it is nice..BUT I want 4wd!

I have an MM controller with a VXL motor and two 3s 5000mah packs. I am debating what I should do..sell the rustler RTR as a brushless, or part it out and save the controller/motor/batts.

I want 4wd but am debating between a 1/8 buggy (truggy?) conversion or the smaller truggy conversion (full 1/8 truggy maybe???)

I am slightly on a budget so keeping the equipment I have now would be nice. The one downfall is that I dont like that the crt.5 is smaller than a rustler (by about 2 inches+ on every dimension).

I have some 1/8 (17mm) tire adapters on my rustler now and run 1/8 buggy tires and some ofna blazer SST tires (about 5 inches tall and 2.2 inches wide). I was hoping to re-use these tires on whatever I get next. Would these tires look ridiculous on a crt.5? I saw a picture of another members crt.5 with some gladiator II tires on it (im familiar with them) and it made the truggy look pretty small... I think even some masher 2000 would look HUGE on a crt.5

What do you guys thing I should do? I am willing to invest a couple hundred dollars on top of whatever I do (IE..selling the rustler RTR, or parting it out). Should I just maybe grab a full size 1/8 buggy roller, convert it and run my blazer SST tires on it?

I just want 1/2 to 1 inch or so more ground clearance than a regular 1/8 buggy, but want extreme durability and low maintenance. I would prefer it to be the size of a rustler, or even slightly bigger. Think I am just better off going with a 1/8 buggy and putting my blazer tires on it? That would require new equipment (motor/controller/batts)...unless i can lengthen/widen the crt.5 somehow?

Any ideas are much appreciated!!!

Thanks
Mike

The length of the mayhem st pro is 19.4 and the width is 16.5

The crt.5 is 14 length / 11 width

The lightning 10 ST is 15.9 length/ 12.6 width.

The rustler is 16.7 length / 12.6 width
My rustler is probably about 17.5 length and 14+ width.

For comparison an ofna 1/8 buggy I looked up (hyper 8.5) shows up as 18 length / 12 wide

SO.... I am still confused... Should I go with a true 1/8 truggy so I can run truggy tires or my blazer tires.

Get the crt.5 and try to make it wider/longer (thinking I dont like this idea...seems to small to me)

Get any old 1/8 buggy roller I can find CHEAP and make it brushless.

Any help? PS im a bit tipsy and I apologize for the continous posts and non-sense! But on a serious note I dont know what to do!

If you decide to keep your VXL 3S system then the CRT.5 would be a great choice. Yes, it is smaller than a 1/10 truck, but it's a blast to drive. If you keep your VXL system and want something bigger than a Hot Bodies LS10 (full 1/10 4wd truck) is a popular choice, although not as high quality as a CRT.5.

If you go with a 1/8 buggy or truggy then you will need more motor and to heavily modify your MM to keep the temps down and run strong. You can run 3S in a 1/8 buggy but most prefer 4S or more.

E-CRT.5 Monster - RCM chassis, MM/Medusa 50x3300/3s, truck tires, 1/8 shocks
E-CRT.5 Stock - Sidewinder/4600/2s, buggy tires
E-8ight - Tekin RX8 2000kv/4S
E-8ight T- Tekin RX8 1700kv/5S

O I didnt even know hot bodies made 1/10 scale stuff! I do like hot bodies as they are affordable but reasonably durable.

I am really considering that stadium 10. Think my mamba max and 3s would be able to power that ok? I would gear it low... I dont need more than 40mph or so, but I love quick acceleration.

Does they make stuff to convert the hot bodies lightning 10 buggy/truggy?

I just found the motor mount for the lightning and the lightning 10 buggies/truggies. There is a really cheap stadium pro (I think its the discontinued one?) on ebay right now...but I think im going to hold out for one of the stadium 10's and convert that with the brushless stuff I already have.

Does anybody know where you can get the LS10 or the GT10 here in the US? Only sites I've seen them on - along with the Mini Hyper ST - are in the UK.

If you go with the CRT.5, you won't be disappointed. Yeah, it's smaller, but has the same benefits that 8th scale truggies do as far as ease to work on, the platform, 4WD, tunable diffs, etc. It takes 2.2" wheels/tires, so that's not a problem. And it uses 8th scale spec diffs (just a shorter diff cup). What I like about it is that if you use 3s/~3300 60mm long motor/MM ESC/BEC, it'll run all day long and you won't have to worry so much about the lipo C rating. It really is a durable truck and fun to drive. On the track, I dunno. I still have fun with it (it basically jumps itself it's that easy), but some may want a longer wheelbase, which is available.

I am still considering the crt.5 a little...but wish it was bigger (on par with 1/10 size). Which is why I am thinking about the LS10.

I too cannot find the GT2 ls10 anywhere! I see it listed on HB site...but even googled it and it only shows up in UK stores like vintage has found.

I have a line on a brand new in box ls10 rtr version for 200... seems like a pretty good deal.

Do you guys think I should get a new motor, or use the vxl motor with the MM esc? Should I grab one of those cheap 8L motors? (I dont think 3s is enough to get any good RPM out of an XL motor right?)
