Lightbulb Revo conversion??! - 06.23.2008, 12:19 AM

I currently own a revo 3.3 with a tired motor. I am thinking of converting it to a brushless setup. But now that the E revo is out I was wondering if it would be better (cost) to just buy the e revo. Or convert my current ride? Any help would be great! Thanks

I would get the new E-revo it looks better and i think it is balanced much better.... the revo 3.3 has a lot of wight in the back of it.. In the NEW E-revo it is all in the middle which I thing would be much better..

I think converting it would be much more fun. All you would need is a RC-Monster motor mount, and you can get a Tekno battery tray and ESC mount and you are pretty much done. As long as you pick the right electronics, the weight balance should be fine.

I'm for the rebuild, but here is how it looks to me.
New parts required:
• 1515 1.5y or ???? $245.00
• MGM / MMM / ????? $200.00
• Lipo or lipo's & charger and balancer $ ??? TBD by buyer
• batery tray $40
• motor mount $60
• battery straps $10
• harden 5mm mod1 pinions (2) $30

Total conversion value = $800 + (realistically)
(Not to be a kill joy) but how are your shocks, diffs, trans, etc holding up? Remember a good BL system will test them all..

Now a new E Revo is what $435 ?? plus batteries and or lipos?.

The choice is yours to make, personally I would go with the new Toy after weighing out the pros and cons of the initial startup.

Whatever you decide on, have fun with it..

Nothing!.. Hahahahaaa..

as far as the weight in the back if you went with the Emaxx tranny that would give you the same configuration as the new E Revo. It also depends on what you will be doing...if you are going to be racing where weight distribution is more critical the Emaxx style is better...I used the stock Revo tranny in my conversion I mostly bash in very wide open areas and for me it works great...I cant even remember the last time I used reverse or my brakes......lol

I think you should get the new E-Revo and convert it to Nitro!

Seriously though, I'd convert the 3.3. I have the new Erevo myself and I'd rather have the metal chassis that doesn't have the stupid battery boxes limiting your battery selection and battery vendors.

You'd have more fun converting it. Or, at least I would.

does it look like there could be a way to cut out part of the chassis where the battery compartment is so the battery wouldnt be completely enclosed? or would this compromise the strength too much

I'd go with the conversion. It'll cost more money in the long run, but you'll give yourself more options for expandability most likely.

Here's my 2.5 conversion to a gorillmaxx E-Revo.

Cost me about twice what the stock e-revo costs, but it was well worth it to me. A fun project to do.

On the left hand side (stock ESC side) you could cut the top of the "box" away and be able to put batteries that are taller than 30mm in there. You'd need to have some sort of shelf over the front or rear shocks so you'd have somewhere to stick the ESC though, obviously.

The right side of the truck still wouldn't be as easy as the stock two motor, motor mount hangs over more on the right side than it does on the left. Once we can get our hands on a traxxas single motor mount (or get something else to fit) we might have more options.

i would go with the conversion . i was reading in the car action special issue : monster trucks that the traxxas e-revo will only do 28 mph . so on top of the e-revo kit then you are going to have to add your brushless set up to that so either way you are going to shell out some money .
i do see a lot of people using the e-maxx transmision but if you use the tekno conversion kit you use the revo's stock transmission and you can tweak on it just like the nitro .
either way good luck on your decision

thanks

I'm thinking the same thing. Getting tired of always working on the motor, so when it finally reaches the end of it's life, I was thinking of converting.

My question is, can it be done without Lipos - realistically? And can it be done with something a bit less costly in terms of motor and ESC? I was thinking of the Novak HV kit that comes with motor and ESC, and I think it's less that the motor and ESC combos some have suggested. I don't race, and I'm not that good of a driver to begin with, so I don't need the fastet truck on the planet.

The other option is to sell the Revo 3.3 (one of you guys will convert it ) and use what little cash that will generate to get the E-Revo. One way or another, the 3.3 will become useless to me at some point!

to me it sounds like you dont want to turn a wrench, if thats the case you would be better off selling your 3.3 and buying a E Revo and staying with the twin Titan motors and running them on NiMh...I like the extra weight of the 3.3 chassis it make it a bit more stable when you are running off road

A nicely done conversion on your 3.3 should put a stock e-revo to shame. You'd have to spend equal amounts of jack in motor/esc/battery upgrades to get the e-revo on par with some of these conversions.

Not necessarily, but I don't have tons of time to do it, nor do I have tons of cash. I would enjoy converting the 3.3, but if it's going to cost me another $800 - $1,000, then all the wrenching in the world can't overcome the lack of funding! LOL If I could do a conversion for the same relative price as buying an E-Revo, then I probably will.

If I can use my existing NiMh batts, then I'm really only looking at motor/ESC combo and some hardware (conversion kit, batt trays, etc), correct? Say the Novak or similar combo is $275, and a conversion kit is $125, then I am in the ballpark of an E-Revo. If that kind of combination would give me roughly the same speed as the E-Revo, then I would do it (I like the idea of the heavier chassis myself). If it would be slower than that, I'd probably just buy the E-Revo. I don't really need it to be faster, that just means it crashes that much harder when I drive it!
