Temp. question - 08.08.2008, 07:13 PM

Ran my mbx-5 buggy today:

Set up:
1. 9xl, geared 44/16
2. MGM esc
3. Badland buggy tires
4. EXTREMELY soft sand

Temps after 15min of hard running:

1. 9xl 170 ( I know this runs hot )
2. MGM 145
3. Batt. 125

I would like to go down to a 15 pinion, for more low punch, but, w/the motor running so hot , I don't know if I dare.... opinions please...

All in all, good/bad? Where I run is a small, tight track w/ very soft sand. So i am figuring that the soft sand is causing some of the motor temps. to be a bit higher.

My 1512 1YF is being repaired and should also run a lot cooler than the 9XL.

The only thing I'm concerned about would be the LiPos. The ESC and motor temps, although hot, are well within spec. You may try going UP a tooth or so on the pinion. When you say "EXTREMELY soft sand" I'm thinking upper beach type sand. Having a lower ratio will control tire spin to some degree and reduce motor rpm, which will reduce the motor and ESC temps a bit. Depending on your throttle control it may induce a higher load on the LiPos, so be careful and check the temps a few times while running.

Would changing my punch control help? I have the timing set to 5...I wish I could adjust it a bit lower.
I will go up a tooth and will see what happens.

Your timing is high for a 2-pole motor. IIRC the MGMs have 6 timing settings. Try setting the timing to 2 or 3. If you have the punch set high, turning that down will help temps a lot as well.

One more ques. The new MGM will not let me go below 5 on the timing. It has an auto. setting, but, that is it. I readjusted punch control to what would equal 60% on the mmm.


As far as to where I live..what do you mean as far as what side...I live down Cape near Chatham...if that helps. I cannot wait for the tourists to leave...It is nice to see all the people, some females more than others....

60% is quite high imo. i run mine at around 20-30%. very good punch that way and still controllable. when i tried 60-80% punch, it felt like the slipper was too loose, but its just the same as when it was at 20-30% punch.

The mgm has 8 settings for acceleration...1 being lowerst 8 being the highest...I have it set to # 5 It was set to #3

5 is the second highest setting for timing, 20*. 2 or 3 would be better, 5* or 10*. Auto is setting 1.

The punch control goes from 0.13 sec to 3.0 sec., the lower number being more powerful. There really is no way to compare this to the CC controllers because they measure different things: CC goes by limiting the max current; and therefore a %, MGM by "time to max throttle"; therefore a time value. I have my punch set to option 3 which is 0.39 sec. It limits wheel spin on takeoff, but if you stay on throttle it catches up to you... Option 5 is 1.3 sec. On very soft sand I think it would help with traction, unless you prefer rooster tails.

Guess I need to change my settings again...Castle has the market on easiest esc to program IMO. Just to make sure I understand correctly, MGM timing settings go from highest to lowest. I will change it to 20,? Good? I changed my accel. to .65 from .39. I will change it again if needed

They go from lowest to highest, actually. The higher degrees (larger numbers) of timing are used mainly for outrunners or other motors with more poles. 5* or 10* works well for Feigaos and other 2 pole motors, 15* works well for Neus; which are 4 pole motors, and 20* and 25* should be used for outrunners and the like with 6 poles or more. Higher timing in a low pole motor creates excess heat. It's complicated, I can explain it if you like .

Yeah the CC ESC's are great. I've never owned one but I can tell just from what I've seen on the forum. One of these days I'll get a MMM V2.

Heh, I've had my MGM for over a year now, so I can ALMOST program it without looking up what the settings mean!

They are a solid controller. The only real downside is the programming. And then there is the "reverse glitch", which if you aren't using reverse then don't worry about it.

I actually have been using rev. w/no probs. I am however going to only run forward tomorrow to see how she does.
