Lipo smell? -
03.17.2006, 01:36 PM
I got a pair of Lipo packs in the post today. One of the packs had a really strong chemical smell, strong enough to take your head off.No doubting a leaking cell.I phoned up and they said send it back and they'll exchange it,so i just sent a leaking Lipo in the post!:002:
I set about sniffing my other packs and noticed they all have a faint sweet smell, not at all similar to the leaking one, maybe something in the pack construction?Anyone else noticed this?Do all Lipos smell sweet? The packs all show as balanced on a balancer,so i'm not worried, but i haven't charged any yet because it's still frfreezing outside.Go smell your Lipos please:005:

Usually there shouldn't be any smell on a non-leaking Lipo. It's possible that the seals around the tabs aren't completely sealed, or the "pouch" might have a slight leak in it. As long as the pack performs and stays in balance, there shouldn't be any problems.

They're evo 20s direct from flightpower. All the packs i've had have this sweet smell from new,i think maybe it's left over smell from manufacturing. The one that was leaking properly (maybe damaged in transit?) was seriously pungent chemically smell,no way you'd not know about it.Also it was a darker shade of orange than the others, like the electrolite had leaked and soaked the orange wrap.

That sweet smell is in fact the juice from the cell, but if it's faint you should be alright. My kokam 3s 3200 has a very slight hint of that smell and I don't worry about it.

I've been reading around and opinion seems split, some people say all their packs have the smell (sweet, fruity, bubblegummy smell) if you put your nose up to the end of the pack and some people say they shouldn't have any smell and only leaking cells should smell.huh.
Lots of people report this smell after storing new or perfectly good packs in an airtight container.
So i'm not sure if all these packs (seems most of them) have very tiny leaks or if it's just from manufacturing where some electrolyte has contaminated the outside of the cell.Maybe soldering/welding causes tiny leaks from the tab seals.I dunno.I'm not going to worry unless it gets stronger, atleast i know what to smell for.

I don't own none but would suspect them to have a very light smell. It is just when they smell like the one you sent back that would bother me.
Peace!

if they work 100% don’t worry, I had cells smell like that but faint. The one that was bad is the one you should worry about.
new tdk cds sometimes smell like that from factory.

The smell may be sweet, but I wouldn't recommend tasting them! :)
