Single Speed without the conversion

I don't have a Maxx, but using the tranny in a Revo. Anyhoo, I had the tranny locked into second using a stiff wire on the shiting arm. However, when I pulled apart the tranny today, I noticed second gear was beat up pretty bad. I assume this is due to the slop from the dog gear. I saw the single speed conversion, but I like having two halves of the tranny to secure to the chassis for strength. So, I figured I could remove the idler and bottom gear to reduce weight and then permanently secure the dog gear to 2nd gear, but I need some type of spacer to take the place of first gear. Anyone have an idea what would work as a spacer? I suppose I could use bearings, but it looks like the first gear is 12mm wide, and no combo of bearings will equal that.

I remember a discussion about this a while back but can't seem to find it with the forum search...

Maybe one of my post?? I had something about that...anywho, what I did was Dremel all the excess material off of the 1st speed gear and use it as a spacer. Just a little plastic housing is all thats left. Then i put 2 screws throught the shift dog and 2nd speed gear with a locknut on the back side. I originally used JB Weld and it didn't hold.

I built some trannies with brass tubing as spacer and just the Gorilla coupler as drive-dog. Works fine. Mike can get you the coupler alone, for 12 bucks I think.

OK, I used Squee's idea for the spacer made from first gear (thanks) and that seems to work great. I also used his idea about securing the dog carrier to 2nd gear, except I used plastic epoxy and screws. :) However, I'm not particularly thrilled with the results. SO, I emailed Mike with Dafni's suggestion about using just the dog carrier from the Gmax single speed conversion. Does anyone have a picture of this adaptor just so I can get an idea about what it looks like?

It is aluminum and slides over the shaft but won't go sliding down for it bottoms out on it. It fits tight in the gear so it has no slop. I don't have a pic of it. I don't have the single speed no more either. It was sold off.

That's how i run mine,i like the whole case to support the motor and also it's a structural part of the chassis.

Yeah, that's why I like to use the whole chassis too. Four small screws is a little too little to use IMO, especially with those XL motors hanging so far back.

Thanks Squee! After looking at those pictures, I don't see how the adaptor keeps from sliding back on the shaft disengaging the gear:



EDIT Doh! Never mind. I see now how the small hub in the center replaces the inner bearing (on the gear) and keeps it there.

half of it fits over the square part of the shaft and drives the shaft and the smaller internal diameter section butts up against it so it can't slide.

I used two screws and some spacers to elimate reverse and took out all the slack. I used 2 2x10mms crews into drilled holes in the cog by my dremel, then i spacered the shaft so it would not move around. I did the same thing to my E-maxx tranny to eliminate first gear, but used 3x12mm screws
