fried 9920 - 01.02.2006, 10:36 PM

Well, I noticed my e-maxx with 9920/9l was having serious issue's. When I tried to give full throttle, it would stutter and then just totally stop. Well, I was driving(for about 5 minutes) and then I heard the truck rev, but it wouldnt go. When I took the gear cover off, I saw a shredded spur and messed up pinion. Okay, I can live with that. But, the pinion gear was stuck on the motor shaft and I couldnt get it off. So, I put the pinion gear(with motor attached) in a vice. I got out a screw driver and a hammer and hit the shaft of the motor to slide the pionion gear off. Well, when I hit the shaft, the back plate of the motor came off(so, while it was off, I took the motor apart to see the inside). Well, when I was testing the esc and motor without a pinion on it, the esc started to smoke. So, I un-plugged everything and started to curse. I then emailed finedesign(rc-monster was out of the 9920 when I wanted to buy it so I had to get it from finedesign). After emailing, I decided to test the system again. Well, everything seems to work fine, and I cant figure out why it works, or why it started to smoke. I dont think that it is safe to run the truck, but what do you guys think? I wanted to buy everything from rc-monster, but since I couldnt I at least got the 9l

No, the pinion gear came loose and that's why it slid forward and messed up the spur gear. But thanks anyway

You say it still works after you smoked it. I smoked a 7020 and still run it in a truck now. I shorted the batteries out and the esc was the complete circuit.

Peace!

Ya, its weird, it seems to work at full throttle, and I can slowly accelerate or go in reverse and the brake works, but obviosly there is somehting wrong with it so I am waiting for finedesign. Oh, I had to squeeze the pinion in a vice in order to get the motor off. I dont have a pinion puller, so that was the next best thing I could think of to do. Well, when I squeezed the pinion in the vice, it got trashed.

do you guys think its alright to use the speed control? I mean, everything seems to work fine now, except for the burnt electronic smell. I just dont want to cause more damage to anything else.

Interesting. I wonder if you put everything back the right way when you rebiult the motor? There are a couple spacers that are pretty important. A smoking controller can't be a good thing. If it works, it works, but if it isn't working right, I wouldn't use it myself. Any potential warranty will certainly be voided if you use a damaged motor or controller.

I will say that if smoke come out then you probably smoke something...
If ESC operational and BEC provides correct voltage (recommend to verify, especialy under load) then probably you just smoke couple (maybe one) FET. Which is Ok and not a big problem, only reduced you current ratings by 10-20A thats it.

Artur

P.S. Sometimes it is possible to create short circuit in windings by pulling magnet to hard through the windings, there are not protected at all...
