I bought an ultramaxxed tranny used off of ebay a little more than a year ago. The seller said he had it for a couple years and never had any issues, and I have never had any issues in the time I had it. When I first got it I opened it up to look at the gears, they were covered in thick grease and everything looked OK. I never questioned if they were real or not, but with all of the fakes showing up lately I'm just wondering how to tell if they are real or not. And if they are real what gen are they? I'm thinking that if they must be the gen 1 gears. I think the gen 2 and 3 gears had gold colored idler gears. These are kinda black colored.

So how can I tell if they are real or not? Ive been using it for the last 6 months or so in my revo, but since I switched to a center diff setup I'm not using it anymore and I'm thinking about selling this tranny on ebay, but don't want to list it as ultramaxx if its not real. I don't want to be one of those people. Anyone know how I can tell? I think they are authentic, but how can I tell for sure?

Heres a picture. I just tore the tranny down for the first time since I got it and was going to clean it up and regrease them before listing it. Still a little grease residue on them but should give you an idea of what they look like.

Any help here is apreciated.

They appear to be real, just not sure what generation...The idlers appear to be UE's, and if I'm not mistaken, one of the generation's used UE idlers. Perhaps Gen3?

no, gen 3 used brass idlers. They look okay for gears that ran so long.

I actually thought that the gen 1 gears had the non gold colored idlers.

I did a search and read everything I could find, but didn't find any thread that actually had an answer. They were all kinda like this thread... He thought it was this.... and someone thought it was that.... No agreement, or anyone that stated that they knew definitively what was what.

those are a set of gen II's, because i had a set of them at one time...and gen II's and III's both used the brass idlers.....however gen III's had stell pin inserts inside the 1st gear and 2nd gear...right where the shiftdog pins would make contact.....and yes they are the real deal

I bought a set of gears off of ebay for $100. I am not sure if they are genuine or not. The seller claims that they are titanium. Before you guys hang me out to dry and tell me that I have been had, please take a look at the attached pdf photo file. If anyone has any insight on special instructions and/or care that I should use to install them in my FLM tranny, please let me know. My biggest concern is how they will wear with the stock input shaft gears. Thanks for your time.

you can use a high temp grease in the tranny case or on the gears...also the upper shaft pins that hold the upper gears on will shear...so you may want to replace them with a piece from a hex key...other that that you should be ok

Thanks...I appreciate the info....I did bulletproof the inputshaft with steel pins. Talk about a pain in the arse.

Do you have any idea by looking at my gears if they are legit?

Looks like titanium to me.that doesn't mean a lot though in itself,some Ti alloys are rather soft.they look awesome actually.

If the idlers start to wear you can always put a steel idler with the Ti output gear,it's OK for the output gear to be a little less hard than the idler.Certainly looking at that set of ultramaxxed with the steel idlers would support that.

The genIII idlers were a high strength brass,presumably the hardness was somewhere between that of the input and output gears.They're weakly attracted to a magnet.

They have another set listed on e-bay,says they had them made at a cost of $500 with a 6 month wait,doesn't mention about having more than one set made.says the pulley is titanium too but it looks like aluminium,unless it's polished.i hope it's not a scam...

No...he just claimed they were Titanium. However, the first thing I did was put a magnet to them and sure enough there was A LOT of attraction. Therefore I conclude they are steel. How will this effect wear if I decide to run them? Does anybody know?

All of the gears and the pulley are made of steel. Probably same vendor/seller. Sounds similar to the auction I purchased these. I sent the guy an email prior to buying them in order to confirm that he was selling Ti parts...he indicated that they were Ti. I have been down this road before...pay pal is a good vehicle to to get a refund. I sent him an email that I would pay him $30 plus shipping...seems fair since that is a little more than what steel idlers cost. Lets see if he'll refund me some cashola. If he doesn't agree, then I'll dispute thru pay pal.

In all honesty...I am just as much at fault...I read Serum's warning and purchased anyway.
