Another spin on the steel pinions - 09.07.2007, 12:03 AM

Here we go again, another Steel pinion on steel spur theory. Sorry guys!!!

Had an idea and am going to have some maching done, thought I would share it with you guys and see what everyone thinks. I have read here that Mike had a batch of hardened pinions made out of clutchbells. He cut the bell off and pressed an adapter into the center that had a 5mm hole and setscrew in it. Now he offers hardened pinions, robinson racing IIRC. My idea is to do the same thing with an adapter, but use a clutch bell with removable gear, so that the cheap part can be replaced and the adapter/threaded portion reused. Would also make using a 2 speed tranny (lst etc) viable. Here are the parts that I am using and when I get to the machine shop I will report back.

Pinion gears (15t - 22t):

I did something like that once so I could run a 2 speed in my XLB. Works great. Just dont use reverse or the pinion uncrews in a hurry.

EDIT: Or motor brakes for that matter.....

I can't decide if its more fun
to make it...
or break it...

Yeah, was trying to figure out how to get around the unscrewing problem. Maybe use a 2nd pinion and tighten them against each other, like double-nutting when you do not have a nylock handy.

I used it with a mechanical brake and a 2 speed tranny. The 2 speed has a one way bearing in it so it doesnt apply any pressure when coasting and a mechanical brake so there was no motor brakeing pressure. Other than that I'm thinking it will be pretty tough to keep the pinion on there. Double nutting might work as long as the threads are long enough to get 2 pinions on there. Only way to know for sure is to try.

Yeah, I was thinking of trying it out on a hyper 7 buggy that I will be running on 6s, with mechanical brakes. I figure if I turn the brake off on the controller and use the stock brakes it could work, Just need to figure out battery mounting!!!

Sounds like a good idea for those who need a two speed, but how are you going to allow both speeds while retaining motor brake/reverse? Usually, first gear is always engaged via a OWB and when 2nd kicks in, it spins the shaft faster than 1st gear does so the shaft "slips" OWB/1st gear.

And BTW: Mike's current run of hardened pinions don't use a CB...
