tenergy batts too hot -
01.23.2008, 06:47 PM
has anyone had problems with tenergy 4200 8.4 nimh batteries? I was running them in my emaxx and one cell on one of the batteries got real hot and melted the wrapping off. It still operated but it would get really hot. Then today the other battery started doing the same thing. Again one cell got real hot(180+). Is the pack bad? Or maybe just the one cell? Any input would be great.
setup
stock emaxx3905 on 14nimh, hot battery first time
emaxx3905 with feigao 10XL w/ MM on 14nimh 22/58, second hot battery

Tenergy cells are basically poor quality cells in general. If you try to draw a lot out of them, there going to get hot like that.
IB4200s might cost more, but they will work better, and last longer. Worth the extra $$ for sure.

x2 for what sleebus said, even in a light rustler I cooked all my tenergy packs, i tore all mine apart and rebuilt them with good battery bars, side by side style. they still get hot, but they last longer,

I think the cells are good, especially some of the smaller cells, but the pack construction pretty much sucks. The 3500's I have are incredible, and stomp the crap out of any gp3300 packs I've had for punch and runtime. After building them into sxs packs, I no longer had the shrink wrap melting heat problems that they had before. I've had 4 3500 packs, 2 3800 packs, and 2 4200's. I honestly found the 3500's to be the best cells.

Tenergy cells are good for rotostarts or bump boxes, but that it. I had a 3300 tenergy pack that I got in trade and rebuilt it to get rid of the paper thin battery bars and they still were worthless for running anything more than a toy RTR with stock motor. They eventually wound up in a rotostart and they worked fine for that.
I can't decide if its more fun
to make it...
or break it...

Afraid I have been stuck by tynergy too. I bought a pr of emaxx 4200mah pacs and they are and always have been disappointing. New, they never charged to more than 3000 and that was just one of them, the other only 2500-2700. I thought they just needed some c/d cycles so I cycled them a few times and they showed no improvement at all. They won't stan dbehind them either, I tried that route.
Classic signs of bad or marginal cell. You can pull the pac apart and replace those cells and rebuild as a sids by side pac. May get some more time from the for your money, but they are just cheap, low quality cells. They will fair better in something that has a lower amp draw. I won't buy them again.
They act like they are way old and have been sitting. Those that work were probably bought when they were fresh. Long odds though on getting fresh ones!

I have had good success with the tenergy 3500 cells. I run 14 of them in my sx27 and they work well. I tried the 3300 and they are no good, not high drain cells. I also did not have any success with the 3800. Pack constuction is poor and will not let them flow. I would say to rebuild them as side by side packs and see what happens.

Did not help my 4200s - sbs with novak bars, still poor.
If you've got a cell going bad, dont have much choice though.
