Charger for lithium ion/polymer - 03.01.2008, 02:21 PM

Is there a good charger that will charge both, with the right cutoff for each? And possibly even charge 2 batts at the same time?! It would be nice to get a A123 5s2p pack that I could charge on it too.

the Hyperion 0610I will do all those things, but i wouldnt go below a 25 amp PS if you wanted to charge 2 packs at once, I have the same charger but I dont have the option of charging 2 packs at once, I have issues while using the chrgers balancer, I just charge through the 4mm output jacks, I have the hypierion lb6 external balancer I use but the charger is very user friendly otherwise

here a link http://www.b-p-p.com/proddetail.php?prod=0610iduo

How about http://www.b-p-p.com/proddetail.php?prod=d_EOS_5IDP. for the $115 option, does that mean it comes with an AC power supply?

that was my first charger before they came out with the ac/dc model, it will work but chargers that have a self contained PS are not that powerful, Hyperion has a another model that only puts out a total of 50 watts, this is the link

its a few dollars more, but the 5i ac/dc model will be enough, you will just be limited as the current it will put, depending on how big of a pack you want to charge

if you want to charge 2pack at the same time. As well as able to charge A123cell in 15min. The FMA cellpro 10s will do it, but it is a bit expensive at $190.

I love my Hyperion chargers. I own the 12i and the 5i. They are both great.

Will do up to 8s li-ion, lipo, lifepo, whatever. Balancer built in. This is the same as the imax b8 with the resistor problem corrected. Basically a cheaper version of the bantam.

Actually there a few choices on the market that will do well in various situations. IMO if you are in this hobby for any length of time and plan on playing for a while, then don't try to go cheap. If you buy something to save a few dollars now, you will end up wanting/needing something better down the road later on. Do your research, find something that will satisfy any need that you think you may have and get the best unit that appeals to your sense of style. That way you will only have to buy one and stick with it. Any unit can be a little bit complicated, but once you get the hang of using it, you will have a blast no matter which one you pick. If you like experimenting with 2S, 3S, 4S, 5S, and so on, then get one that can handle them all and be done with it. It's either that or you will end up with several units laying around to charge that different packs that you purchase for your toys. Good luck with that.

When I was looking for a Li-specific charger, I was looking for an adjustable CC/CV threshold. That way, I can dial in whatever value I want for the types of cells I'm charging and should help future-proof against new technology. The TME Xtrema does this. However, it is ONLY a Li charger (although I've tricked it into charging NiMHs too ) and whatever CC/CV threshold you set applies to all the profiles globally.

Wow that's a sweet feature! I think I'll look into that for my next charger! I don't even understand why anyone should need to charge NiMH's anymore anyway?

I own the 1210i with the LBA10+ balancer...love it to death. Charging A123's in 15 minutes rules!

Wouldn't the 0610i be better? The 0610i is 250w 6s @ 10A instead of 180w 12s @ 10A. As for the Xtrema it looks like that is 170w 10s @ 8A. They are all similar price. Also can I use my Astroflight blinky balancer instead of LBA10 with A123?

How does the hyperion charge lifepo? i never realised it was an option?

BTW something often overlooked, in fact I've never seen it mentioned apart from in the official A123 dev kit, is you can fast charge that batteries with a 4.2V CC/CV (normal lipo charge) @10A with a 15min cutoff, giving it a 96% charge with no cell damage.

Yep, it is twice as powerful, but it can't charge the high cell counts like I'd like to. I can charge a 12S A123 pack with no problem with the 1210i. I can charge two 6S A123s (all balanced to each other) packs in one shot with the 1210i. You can't do that with the 0610i.

Yes, you can use your blinky, but the LBA10+ is so much better. It hooks into the *10i series and you can read out the individual cell voltages like this:

The LBA10+ does LiPo and A123 cells, unlike the blinky which you have to buy a second one. Also, the balancer seems much stronger than the blinky. The LBA10+ seems to pull the packs in balance much faster, instead of the blinky which seems to go on forever and never quite gets there. You can at least read out the voltages with this.

You just pick "A123" as a cell type. The newer versions are A123 capable. The older ones (and the LBA10) was not. I think you can have the older versions flashed to do A123, but I'm not sure.
