Race Revo Build - Suggestions - 03.22.2008, 05:53 PM

I'm completing a BL REVO to race in the RCPro Series Monster Truck class and am looking for suggestions. The biggest parameter to deal with is the limit of 14.4V. The second parameter to focus on is the requirement that the lowest point of the engine (silly nitro term) must be 1.5" above the skids. Lets just say the entire motor must be above the top of the stock Revo chassis. Here's what I have so far:

Batts: 4S2P A123
ESC: 125B
Motor: Feigao 8XL
Diffs: Stock Revo
Trans: Maxx

I have the batts, esc and motor in hand. I also have several old Maxx trans, 1 new one and 2 Revo trans. I can also make just about anything (custom trans, geardrives, beltdrives, etc).

Let me know what you would do in my shoes.

P.S. Include outrunners as an option here.

14.4v is a real handycap, and really does limit your motor options- I doubt any outrunners will run all that well on such a low voltage (in a direct-drive setup).

How long do the races last?

Im thinking you may have to use a hotter motor than the 8XL to get any decent speed, but it depends how tight the track is- acceleration being more important obviously on a tight track. Anyway, for racing the stock revo tranny should be fine, use it with the RCM motor mount, then stick the batts on the other side of the chassis, using the TeknoRC battery tray maybe....

pay attention to the transmission requirements in the RCpro rules. They way I read them is it must be a auto shifting 2 speed transmission. That would outlaw the emaxx tranny (at least a single speed one for sure) and pretty much require the stock revo tranny to be used.

here is the quote...

Transmission - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Must be multi speed gear reduction. Diffs inside the transmission are allowed only. Front and rear brakes allowed.

My question is... does the slipperential count as a dif "inside" the transmision?

I can't decide if its more fun
to make it...
or break it...

Thanks J, I read right by that. I raced RCPro in '06 and I don't remember that rule. They must have added it last year when they made the arena truck class with it's single speed.

So now that changes things....

On the 8XL, I almost went 7 but thought I could just gear. A lot of the tracks I've been on usually only have one long straight and then a ton of tech stuff so I figured the 8 would be OK. I might just go get a 7 too. I was thinking of upgrading to a Neu 1515 1Y too.

Now I'm thinking Revo trans gutted to foward only. I'll probably build one with a diff and one without. Should I keep the manual brakes?

Couldn't I say my new Emaxx trans is 2-speed and just leave it in high? Maybe ;)

Qualifiers are usually 5-10 min and mains range from 15 to 60min.

Here are the rules I must fit in.
