4S in Buggies - 05.21.2008, 07:00 PM

Seems like most common lipo battery used in a Buggy is 4S. Is that because of weight? I was looking at running a 2.5D 1512 in a Buggy on 5S

I'm running a 1512 2.5d/f in my 8ight on 5s. The Maxamps 4000mah 5s is a perfect fit, not too heavy and gives killer power with long runtimes and manageable heat. I had to add a heatsink to my Quark but no problems since. Best car I've tried yet!

4s is often plenty to surpass the nitros in both acceleration and top speed. I'm running 4s with a Neu 1512 2.5D/F in my Hyper 8, geared for ~45mph, and everything (MM + batts + motor) run at very acceptable temps.

What kind of run time do you get with that set up?

What gearing do you use in the Hyper 8? To get the 8ight to go 45mph on a 1512 2.5D & 4S would require a 17T-18T Pinion and 46T Spur. On 5S would require a 14T pinion. What run time you get?
How much extra run time would I get on using a 5S 5000 instead of a 4S 5000?

18t pinion with Kyosho 46t plastic spur. Run time when I was using a 14t pinion and 4s 4800mah was 15-20mins depending on the track. I've only run one pack with the 18t pinion, but I would guess ~15mins of runtime.

I'm running 14/46. I get 20 minutes of hard running or close to 30 min of my usual bashing around. I occasionally run at a local track and I never get more than 1/2 throttle into it, way too fast to let loose but it drifts like a champ on any surface.

When I get my Mamba Monster I'm going to run 6s and about 16/46 in my CR. I just bought a nice TP Extreme 6s 3850 but I probably won't get it until I get the MM because the guy I bought it from lives in Canada. Oh well, I guess the timing will work out well though right at the same time.

I'll keep you guys posted on my build thread as soon as I get that stuff in.

Would anyone know how much extra run time I would get running a 4S 5000 comparied to a 5S 5000?

Assuming you gear them both for the same top speed (and thus use the same throttle input), you should gain 25% runtime. So if you get 15mins on 4s 5000, you'd get almost 19mins on 5s 5000mah.

But if you keep the same gearing, you might end up with the same or slightly less runtime (depending on if you changed your throttle control or not with the higher top speed).
