converting to brushless - 05.24.2008, 02:01 PM

Going to buy the flm chassis, MMM, 1521/1y/S maybe F? Plan to run flightpower 6S

I want this to be able to run cool, and reliable. Would the finned can fit in the flm chassis? Also any recommendations for insane power, with good cool reliability? Maybe the 1527 on 6S?

Thanx

Mike

Gee, really? I figured since this was the Savage forum that you were converting a Revo. j/k

Maybe he's asking what kind of Savage? Savage 21/25, X, X SS, or XL?

Thats why I didn't include it in the initial post. But I am converting a Savage 25. The diffs are already upgraded with hardened gears aluminum diff cups and bulks.

2 or 3 speed?

And what size (diameter) tire will you run?

2 or 3 speed I have the option, and current tires are 40 series pro line mashers 6.6" in dia. Also have pro line 40 series mulchers that are 6.1" dia.

Stick with the 1521, I did the 1527 on 6S and it wasn't controllable at anything over half throttle. In fact it wasn't even that fun to drive. I have a 1521 in my Savage now and that is much better. I use the 1577kv with 6S Flightpowers and a gearing of 52/16. Good mix of wheelies and top speed and temps stay reasonable. Get the new high speed 3rd gear set that just came out and top speed is even better! The only drawbacks are you still get a lot of busted drivetrain parts! Guess that goes with the brushless territory.

The 1521 1y sounds good. I would stick with the smooth can for battery clearance with the flm chassis. Gearing with the 52t spur and an 18t pinion wiil get you around 45mph and also help with battery clearance. I figured that gearing with the 2 speed, if you use the 3 speed you should pick up 3-4mph.

Only issue with the flm chassis is that if you try to run a small pinion or spur, the motor will intrude on the battery space. Just something to think about. Otherwise you project sounds like a beast! The 1521 should put out some power. I plan to run mine on a 1515 sized 1200kv aveox and 8s lipo. Have to use an air esc though, but not too bad.

Which 1527 did you have? Did it run cool through the pack? Looks like the 1521/1y/s is the right direction. I want insane power, I'm building this more as a exhibition truck.

The idea I have in my head is. Half throttle down the road, punch it and wheelie past my buddies with nitro savages, and buggies. This is not going to be raced as I have 16 other r/c's I do that with.

I had the 2300 kv motor. If you kept the gearing at 14 tooth or lower pinion, the heat would be reasonable. Any higher and it would heat up hot near the end of the pack. The 1521 is the better choice. Put some spacers under the motor mount for clearance and you are ready to go. I just ran my 1521 with some Jumbo Kong tires for fun. My Fastlane super thick outdrive dogbones actually twisted about 90 degrees on one wheelie! Ungodly torque on these motors. Also, watch your foams. It sounds crazy but stock Pro-line foams will wad up and deform after a while. Do they make a molded foam for the 40 series?

If I went with a lower kv 1527 then the heat would be less of an issue correct? How much power difference between the 1521 and 1527? I'm not a 100% positive if the foams are molded on the 40 series, been a while since I had them off.

You could go with the 1500kv 1527, but I wouldn't recommend it. These motors just pull too much current. A higher volt 12S ESC would be fun to try. As for power differences, I think the 1527 is just too strong for a Savage. The parts aren't made to handle it. Even the 1521 is probably too much, but a careful throttle finger works wonders. The 1521 will flip it right on its lid every time, even with the wheelie bar attached. If you want to beat the nitro guys, I would suggest a 1515. It will easily pull past the nitro and be controllable and reliable enough.
To sum it up, 1521 for hard core basher. Racing and higher speed runs against nitro-1515. The 1527-crazy but not really drivable.
