Lightning stadium basher setup please help

K guys I have a lightning stadium sport and am building a DIY brushless setup for it home made mount home made battery box etc

I will be using one of the cheapy 60a esc from ebay and 7-10 cell packs 4500 mah(building both sizes) lipo is not an option

I am looking to be roughly nitro fast I am not out for mind numbing speeds jsut enough to bash and have fun I know there are more ideal setups as far as esc and battery selection goes but this is what i am sticking with that being said what motor will be best for these categories

TOP SPEED
what motor will give me the highest rpm per volt

BEST BALANCE
combination of top speed and runtime

RUNTIME
what motor is going to last longer than I do

Curious to see what ppl suggest here... You have pretty limiting constraints... 10 cells isn't really very much - approx 3s lipo voltage (but with less performance).

60a is probably over-rated and hence not much to work with... Agree 110% if you're on a budget to build or get a el cheapo battery tray (note a broken rustler or stampede chassis works well - for postage I think I can get you one for free).

I would suggest something with a higher KV in the 3000+ kv range and gear down. Guessing your budget you could try an AMMO or a used feigao L can.

PS LSP's work ok with rotated diffs and you could run twin packs at the rear

PPS what is the full spec of the esc?

this is a budget build and also a bit of an experiment I am thinking about a 6L it seems to be the motor i keep leaning towards but I am not sure how it will hold up as far as run times go as well according to the calc i found on here 12v for a 6l will be exceeding the max rpm but i couldnt find specific info on what the max rpm is if its not wha ti want inthe end adding to it and replacing parts is an option but for now this is what i am leaning towards jsut to get me running

if your refering to a feigao 6l, don't get it, it would heat up alot, get a 8xl or a 9xl IMO

speaking of temps me and a friend talked about this today what are the acceptable running temps for a brushless motor

i dont know what you mean by dog but a truggy needs more tourqe to get it goin so go with a lower kv motor to keep temps down or lower your gearing, i would go with lower kv, again, IMO if you want a budget motor check out hobby city they have a super cheap INRUNNER motor, i think its 1900kv its identical to a feigao 9xl but a cheap version.

I would go with a feiago 7l motor, and gear for around 35mph. That should be fine with your 10 cell 0amp esc combo.

Heres a few pics of mine. Motor mount is made of carbon fiber and works well. You could use al as well.

Battery tray is just an al angle with a piece of plexi riveted to it. I use verlcro straps to hold the battery in, around the length and top to bottom.









I moved the esc to a platform above the rear driveshaft. Was not too fond of it on top of the servo.

lincpimp i was looking at your truck trying to figure out why it looked so diffrent from mine then i got it its the 10th scale lol I am doing the lightning stadium sport but used to own the stadium 10 very nice little truck it must fly with that setup using the top speed calc i found on this site looks like I am leaning towards the 7L seems to be the motor that will give me the most bang on 7 cells as well as have the ability to ocassionally run on 10 without grenading not necessarily geting a fiegao but somthing in that KV range

I could be all wrong though like i said i am looking for a motor that i can run either 7 or 10 cells on that will give melow to mid 30's on 7 cells and low to mid 40's on 10

So you have an 1/8 scale truggy? If so the 7l or any l can sized motor will overheat, and 7 cells nimh will not provide enough power.

ya its an 1/8th scale i am doing alot of reading and finding out real quick what will and wont work so 7l is out and now i am looking 9l or 6xl its amazing what a few mins of reading will get u i have also decided to scrap the 8.4v battery setup and go to a 12v setup just means instead of having 3 packs i will have 2

maybe if i give some info about my exact plans it might help first and foremost my truck is a basher that being said i run hard all winter and for that plan on running a revolver 650 with a waterproof esc and all the goodies that go along with being waterproof, but sincei am making it electric might as well have a brushless setup for the summer as well. I am limited by my charger to 10 cell packs nimh and am buying 24 tenergy 4500 mah cells not the best cells but a risk i am willing to take I know they will be fine for the brushed setup. In all honesty i care less about the brushless setup than i do about getting the brushed, brushless is jsut a bonus for summer and other than the motor i really dont want to spend much cash

hopefully this helps in advice but I am also hoping iam learning and that the 9L or 6xl is good choice lol guess i cant have it both ways

For motor and ESC, it is best to try and stay below about 165*F to 170*F. Of course, it is possible that they will get hotter than that after a hard run, but if you keep them below that temperature, thats a good running system.

12V also won't be adequate for a 1/8 truggy. You will need at minimum 12 cells or two 6 cell packs. And even that is barely enough. I'd recommend going to 14 NiMH or or a 4s lipo. Lipo being better of course... The 6xl and 9L will also run VERY hot. I'd recommend the 8xl or 9xl if you want to stay on the inexpensive side of motors. Of course though, with these low KV motors, you will need to run a higher voltage (like the packs I mentioned) in order to have decent speed.
