So this is my maiden voyage on this forum and I'm looking forward to hearing your comments.
Currently I'm sportin a fully loaded Supermaxx truck with racer x suspension and a torpedo chassis. I've been running a HV-maxx on 14 cells but not satisfied with the performance, so now I'm looking to move up to a more powerfull BL setup.
The truck is weighing in around 12+ pounds all loaded up and I want to be able to use 16 cells if I choose.
Here's the set up I'm considering:

BK Wanderer 8XL
BK 12020 controller
Motor clamp/heat sink
UBEC
Strobe slipper kit
51 tooth nylon ofna spur (mod 1)
12, 14, 16 tooth pinion (mod 1)

I should tell you that I enjoy bashing around the negiborhood and bmx park when I can get there. I'm currious to know what listed here is over kill and what is nessecary and what speeds and run times I can get from the various setups.

Hi, welcome to the boards. I will be running about the same setup as you are. I have FLM arms, 1/8 hybrids, shock towers. I am waiting on the FLM(35mm longer than stock) chassis to come in. I ask about the same question and here is what Mike recomened.

For the brushless setup, the wanderer 8xl or 9xl would work very well with the warrior 9920 or 12020 controller. The 9xl would suit itself to higher voltage when you make the Lipo jump, as well as provide a longer runtime. The 8xl would be more ideal on 14 cells, though. Either would work very well with the right gearing and setup, providing plenty of speed if that is your need, and plenty of torque for bashing.

I think the setup sounds good. I think you will be very impressed with the setup. I would start with 14 51 on the gearing. You can go from there. The 8xl is good for 16 cells no problem.

Thats a great all around motor. Its very happy on 16 cells. Put it on a 6s lipo and its :Love: .

Great comments guys, just what I was hoping to hear. A couple of follow up questions.

What's do you gain with the 12020 vs the 9920? Is there a little more margin for error when it come to overheating?

I'm not sure I understand the need for the UBEC if the controller already has one, other than everyone recomends that you use it.

Would I get more run time from 16 cells or just more power or a little of both.

12020 has more amps. bk rarely fries as long as u folow their recomended directions. U can take care of overheating with some nice fans. Welcome to teh site!

the ubec regulates the voltage to the servos and gives them 6v constant and will make the controller run cooler.

Ahhhh.... I get it, anything to keep that controller cool. Especially after dealing with the constant thermaling of the HV maxx system.
Is the 8XL better suited for 14 cells or 16 or either is fine.

either is fine. you can even run 12 cells on it with proper gearing. our very own coolhand has run a 9xl on 12 cells with awsome performance.

YOu can even run the 8xl on 18 cells if you like. :D If you want to see what a 9xl will run like click on my website. :D It has a video of a 9xl on 12 and 16 cells.

Thanks Coohandcountry those are great vids. They give me a real good idea of what I can look forward too. Just currious what kind of run times you get bashing around like that. Is there any reason you can think of to jump up to the 12020?

there is really no reason. a 9920 will do just fine.

Only if you want to do a 7or8XL on 20 cells this wil be more for the 7XL but it wil handel some extra stress
But if you do a 8XL on max 18 it won't be necessary
And the 7XL will also be safe on 16cells more can work but than you are stressing your controller and it can damaged it

If you run a 7xl the 12020 may run a touch cooler.
