does higher gearing increase rpm or just the voltage? - 08.17.2008, 07:27 PM

im using this speed calculator:
http://scriptasylum.com/rc_speed/_top_speed.html
and even when i lower the teeth on the spur why does the rpm stay the same?
i thought gearing up would increase the amount of rpms or is it only the voltage that increases rpm on the motor?

only voltage will increase motor RPM

Gearing up will increase the RPM of the wheels, but as was stated, the RPM of the motor depends on voltage. (The RC calculator shows only the motor RPM)

ouu ok makes sense. so since my 7xl on 4s is at 35k rpms, which is right around the sweet spot or even the max rpm for a feigao motor, will i be able to gear even higher....maybe a 24/58 if my motor was only at the 170 degrees range during the entire run?
right now im at 25/68 geared for 40 adjusted mph and 41 max speed. the 24/58 will give me 49 max and 46 adjusted.
so as long as my motor temps are under 180, i should be cool to do this set up right...even though im overgeared like craaaaazy??

170 is the maximum for a feigao motor really, any taller gearing and it will likely get too hot and de-magnetize the rotor > toast.

Keeping the motor and esc temps is check is vital- at that end of scale, your motor is on the edge, one tooth higher on the pinion may be possible, may be bad news.

Going from a 68 to 58 spur is a huge leap- your motor will fry for sure.

ok but lets just imagine i did go to the 24/58, and the temps were only 170 throughout the entire run, then is it possible to run this setup safely?

still too hot, shorter runtimes because of inefficiency

170 is still too hot? i thought as long as its not over 200 your ok. thats what i read in the faqs page. but some say 180 for motors is the max limit. so now im only at 170...is it because of the cheap feigao motors? i dont care about runtime loss. i just want more speed without having to buy another motor....just yet haha.
im looking to gain about 5-8mph which is why i want to gear higher than 24/68.
im thinking once i add my fan, i should be able to get lower temps, but ill see what temps i get with my 24/68 of course before i do any changes...but i guess right now, im thinking ahead and hoping for the best.

you "can" just dont expect your motor to last long... you just need a better motor

you can
A. Sell your current motor and get a better one-then gear up
B. Gear up current one, de-mag it, then have to buy a new motor and get absolutely nothing for the other.. more money in the long run

thats earlier than expected. i barely got any runtime in my 7xl due to sooo many broken parts on my emaxx. who knows, i may not even need a new motor if my 40mm fan does a good job.

you do? thats exactly what im about to do. so how long have those 12v fans been working? are you running 4s as well? what vechicle and what are you cooling with the fan? how much did temps drop after you installed the fan? did you gear up at all after?

he runs them on 5S, which is crazy fast. ive found that the higher the cfm is the shorter they last, and it seems once you get to a certain point no extra airflow seems to make any difference...

just my opinion.
