4s 5000mAH vs 5s 5000mAH runtime?? - 11.18.2008, 09:47 PM

I have heard that running higher voltage will increase runtime (depending on gearing and the motor of course). So will i see both increases in speed/power and runtime by going to 5s 5000mAH? Setup is E-revo with MMM/Teckno Neu 1515/1y and current batteries are polyquest 30c 5000mAH 2s hardcases, and how much runtime will i gain if any?

Thanks

If you dont change your gearing, you will see a lot more speed, but likely not much in run time. If you gear for the same speed, you will get more run time. of course it helps to have the motor rpm in a reasonable range too.

5s 5000mah has 25% more potential energy than 4s 5000mah. Generally speaking and depending on the gearing and motor setup you can get 25% more power or 25% more run time or somewhere in between. Its not quite that simple, but generally speaking.

I can't decide if its more fun
to make it...
or break it...

Sounds good, i'de probably gear somewhere in between to get a little bit more of both, i am looking at the new packs on here (5s 2500mAh) and they are at a great price.

If you gear for the same top speed on 5s as it ran on 4s then your average energy consumption should be the same. 5s 5000mah has roughly 90watt-hours, and 4s 5000mah has about 72watt-hours. So, theoretically your runtime would increase by about 25%. So if you get 20mins now, you can expect something like 25mins.

Geared for the same speed, the 5s 5000mah is going to have less voltage drop than 4s 5000mah. This means you have more power available, and thus the potential for a greater rate of energy consumption. So runtime typically might increase by a maximum of 25% depending on your driving.

The 5s 5000 would be like most like a 4s 6000mah for run time if you gear for the exact same speed (say 40mph) as long as the additional voltage didn't put your motors RPM's out of the sweet zone. If you deviate in speed like the others stated it would throw this off and you can end up with the some gain in run time or a loss in run time depending on your setups with each.
