who can help me make a 6s into a 3s -
10.10.2008, 01:46 AM
hey guys i will be receiving a 6s pack and would like to make it into 2x 3s packs.
i like challenges but when the challenge may make me lose a couple hundred dollars id rather let a pro handle it.
so who here knows how to handle lipos?
thanks

What brand is the pack? Some companies put some super-strong double-sided tape between cells that makes the bond nearly impossible to break without either tearing the Lipo outer material or messing up the cells. If it has a PCB, that could also complicate things.
If this battery isn't built either of these ways, then turning it into 2x 3s should be fairly straightforward.

Actually, if they aren't copper-tabbed cells then it will be a bitch to solder. You need special flux/solder for aluminum tabs. And it stinks bad.
Are they copper tabs, or aluminum?

If the tabs are copper, it is easy. However very few lipos have copper tabs, and even the maxamps copper tab packs only have copper tabs on the pos side (at least the few dozen I have taken apart..
Al tabs doe require special solder and flux, and I have found that some iron tips do not like the flux.
Making 2 3s packs would not be difficult, but you would need addl main wire, and possibly 2 balance taps. Most 6s taps are different than 3s taps. What kind of tap does it come with? When you are splitting the pack the balance tap can be changed to any style. I prefer hyperion, seems to be the easiest to plug in. I hate the kokam tap, and am not that fond of tp style taps either.

align/jst taps are easy to plug in too, they are like Hyperion without the clip-tab on the top

True, maybe I am biased cause I have a ton of hyperion tap adapters and harness pigtails... Makes lipo reconstruction easy (especially when I used to run maxpuff lipos.)
