how do you disassemble a neu motor - 12.04.2008, 10:03 PM

Hey guys, im praying that i didnt fry my motor. A few runs ago i was driving around, and i noticed the slipper starting to slip quite a bit, I didnt drive too long like this but when i brought the truck in and took temps the motor was sitting at just over 200 degrees, not good. I found the culprit to be a missing slipper pad, so i replaced all the slipper pads as well as the whole slipper assembly as it was badly bent.

It seems as though the slipper is still slipping severely (the truck will not wheely and acceleration is not nearly what it used to be) I i whent through the whole drive-train to check for binding, and found a pebble had lodged itself against the center driveshaft. This didnt change anything...

the only thing left to check is the motor and im stumped how to pull the end off. i already have the four small screws out, but the end is on there pretty good and i was wondering what you guys to to get it off.

Also, is there anything that i should look for once it is open, I really hope that no damage was done, and im not sure if 200 degrees would do this to a motor.

It not your fault frying your slipper, Traxxas made a design flaw IMO, the slipper of E-MAXX and E-REVO is just too weak for brushless power. I would recommend you make some mod like this:

Interesting slipper pad. Reminds me of the old strobe days. Since I can't read the site linked, where are those available?

I DIYed them using fiberglass epoxy board, and gave some for free to local friends who also converted their Traxxas to brushless and had the same problem.

Interesting mod himalaya... I may need to make one for my Rustler. It eats slipper pads concurrently for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. If I tighten it enough to save the pads it just spins out all the time. Seems like the combination of the larger surface area & slicker surface would allow finer adjustment(?).

Looks like a nitro brake pad could be modded to work. My ofna ultra vehicles use some sort of fiberglass pad... I will have to measure it tomorrow. Never had a slipper pad fail, but I have cracked the hub before.

Actually this pad made adjustment harder, because the fiberglass epoxy board is far less flexible compared to original slipper material, 1/4 turn of adjustment could make huge difference in slipper effect. But it's so tough it will never fail again.

im not worried too much about the slipper setup, it has been replaced. What i am worried about is my $260 motor....i wanted to take it apart to take a look and was wondering how i should go aboutthis as just taking the four screws off of the end doesnt seem to do it.

Being that the magnet is so strong, you'll have to force the rotor out of the can. Remove the four screws so that you can remove the rear endbell, then press the motor shaft down on a hard surface to push the stator out the back. At this point try and grab it and pull it out. Pliers may be in order, just be careful.

well good news, i think that the motor is fine. I believe the culprit to be the slipper pads being uneven in width (2 were 2.3 mm while the other one was 2.6 mm, so basically i think that 1 pad was doing most of the work). The other thing i think was the cold weather here, i have been running in 30-40 degree weather and today i noticed a big difference in performance as i continued to run the car and the batteries warmed up. At first it was pretty slow, no wheelies or anything, after about five minutes of power started increasing and eventually it was near full power.

That is good news. So you managed to get a look at the motor- No weird smells or anything, I assume? Were those other two slipper pads older? I didn't even think to ask about ambient temperature. You will definitely notice reduced punch when it's that cold out.
