Meshing the Neu motor pinions - 01.09.2009, 09:22 PM

I haven't run it yet, still building, but I notice that the extreme notchiness of the neu motors creates a lot of clatter when rotating the pinion when meshed with the [RR] spur.
I'm hoping that the thing will smooth out when under power, or am I to expect a lot of gear noise at low-mid speeds ??

It does get alot smoother after its rolling , though with a steel spur its gonna be a little louder than the stock plastic .

Are you running a Robinson pinion with the steel spur ?

Not right now. It's Robinson pinions I'm waiting on........... Will it run smoother with them?

No , but the steel spur will wear out the alloy pinions pretty quickly ....

I can say a little on this, I started with a plastic spur on my savage and a novak hardened pinion with the 2200 motor and rolling it by hand or as its starting to take off it is indeed very loud, loud enough I swore I did something wrong. After it was going tho it would get alot more quiet but still a bit noisy so I ordered the HPI metal spur and robinson pinion, just tried that combo last night and it was a bit more quiet then the other combo, lot better in my opinion but at slow speeds you will hear some noise no matter what.

My novak pinions are loud compared to my rc-monster pinion gears, no matter what gear mesh.

I also use the RR spurs with hardened pinion gears. I use a thin coat of marine lube on my gears. I know a lot of guys will say that it just draws dirt into the gears, but it helps to quiet things down a lot. If it gets dirty I just clean it up and relube it again. You only need a tiny bit to make a huge difference. I use "Grim Racer" speed grease, which is a aqua marine gear grease that resists slinging so it stays on the gears. It is like snot. I picked up a couple of jars from T/H and I also use it in my tranny cases. It really is good stuff and it is cheap. Try it for yourself and then make a decision. It works great from my perspective.

Even with Molybdenum grease on the gears, my GTP sounds like it's snapping off teeth when I run at ~10 mph or less. I have a 20T RCM hardened pinion and the 51T Ofna plastic spur with a 1515/1y. The cacophony is lessened at higher speeds. :/

More on what I said before, my 12 tooth rcm pinion meshed with a RR xtra wide spur is actually almost as quiet as it is on the kyosho nylon spur. The novak 11 tooth makes an irritating sound like something is stuck in the drivetrain, but the 9 and 10 tooth pinions aren't as bad.

My theory is that at low teeth counts it is best to stick with pinion gears that are divisable by 3 since brushless motors have a multiple of 3 phases or rotor positions. My guess is that you want each tooth that is pushing the spur gear accompanied by a consistant pull fro the motor. I recommend staying away from 11 and 13 tooth pinion gears, and if you have to, change the spur instead.

Makes sense. But it seems we're getting into "drivetrain and phase resonance".
