brushless E-Maxx? - 01.05.2009, 09:32 PM

Hey guys, first time poster here. Is it really worth putting a brushless system in? I am a virgin when it comes to electrics, more of a nitro guy (or was). I got the new 16.8 for Christmas and its a blast, will a brushless system be a good up grade. I am only interested in bashing with it and running nimh batts.

Oh ya i might get to like this clean electric stuff over nitro.

Depends, if you are happy with the speed and power of the stock truck then BL wont really interest you. If you would like a bit more speed and power/ wheelies, then a mild BL upgrade would make you more then happy (Im thinking a novak hvmaxx 6.5 here). If you want to explore just what the truck can do in terms of speed/handling/backflips, then the castlecreations MMM 2200kv system would blow your socks off.

Even just using good lipo batteries makes a big difference to the stock truck, but then you suddenly find out about the amazing quality (or lack there-of) of the the titans and evx2. Once you bru through a few sets of them you Im sure you'll come back asking about upgrading to BL, plus which lipos are best for any given setup etc.

Lots ot think about really, but just watch a few of the videos and you'll get an idea of the differences- search youtube for BL emaxx and weep

I'd ditto that, espcecially if you intend to stay on Nimh for a while.

Pete, if you end up serious about a Novak HV system, pm me - I might be able to set you fairly cheap.

Losi 8T 1.0, Savage Flux - XL style, LST XXL, Muggy, 3.3 E-Revo Conversion and sitting outside 425hp, 831 Tq Dodge Ram Turbo Diesel. It SMOKES

The 6.5 is def a good mild system. Other than that, youll most likely need lipos

I have a new 16.8v emaxx and imo i would just start out with lipos for right now. i run the rhino 2s 4900mah 20c. They have good punch and have fairly long wrong time and are cheap. great batteries for a first time lipo-er.

The novak hvmaxx 6.5 is the system i was thinking of going with. I just want a little more punch and a little more speed. In mph how much faster will the novak system be?

35-38mph according to novak, and I'd say that was about right really. In stock form the meaxx does about 30-31mph tops (before the titans fall to bits and the evx2 bursts into flames).

The only issue really is that a new hvmaxx pro 6.5 system costs about $300, and so does the MMM 2200kv system- given the choice... there is no choice, its a no-brainer really. I would say look on fleebay for a used hvmaxx system (older version with no lvc & the 3mm motor shaft), that'll cost closer to $150-170 and be better value for what you want really.

Can't beat castle for a good price, that is for sure. If I was going to suggest a cheap bl system for using nimhs on it would be a Mamba Monster esc and a 9xl feigao. Should cost slightly over 200 bucks and will run well with nimhs if geated correctly. Only issue is that you would have to buy pinion gears that have a 5mm bore. If you geared that setup for 35mph the nimhs will survive. Plus you will have the best esc around, and the future potential to upgrade to lipo as that speed control has a low voltage cutoff, which is mandatory for lipo. Still cheaper than the novak 6.5 system, even with a few pinions.

I have the Novak HV6.5 in my 3906 flm maxx and it has way better performance then the stock titans. I oonly run nihms 7-cells and the system works great. Very easy to use also and you will get more runtime out of your batteries. I also have a titan powered 3905 and the heavier flm 6.5 hvmaxx outperforms the titans 10 fold.

hmm i know the battery is the only thing holding you back, but i am suggesting you reconsider going lipo.

the hv 6.5 is like a 350z and the MMM combo is the Porsche Carrera GT. For the same price....WHY NOT?

so the mmm 2200kv system is the mamba monster and you say its better then the novak? when you buy that system what else is needed or is it drop in rtr?

i dont mind dropping some coin for the right system, thats why iam doing my home work now. I have no clue when it comes to electric, like i said iam a rookie.

Also can you run brushless in wet conditions?

Noob, the term is noob

MMM = MambaMonster(Max- this part was dropped officially but we still use it to avoid confusion with the MM- MambaMax).

The MMM system is worth every penny and more, if stupid fast and powerful with almost limitless adjustability is what you're after. The novak systems are good for what they are- old systems given a few tweaks to update them, but they lack the power, adjustability of versatility of the MMM in so many departments its just not funny; I've had both, and the MMM esc wins hands down, as does the MMM motor (CastleNeu) by all accounts.

The MMM is drop in yes, all you will need to do is buy a few pinions, and solder on the battery connector of your choice; at worst you will need a buy a series Y-harness so you can run a pair of 2s or 3s lipos, or a pair of 7 cell nimh packs for example.

Gearing will depend on your voltage/ batts.

Wet conditions should be strongly avoided- the esc has a special coating on the circuit board (PCB), but the connections are not water proof, nor is the esc case. At best you could run after its stopped raining if you do a little work to shield the esc (shower cap, balloon etc over the esc or electronics), and snow running is okay if you do the same; doesnt take much to keep out some snow, but running the truck when its very wet or through puddles is just asking for trouble- its a $300 system, no need to try and kill it for the sake of having some fun.

To learn more about BL and lipos etc in general, and how to setup a truck, read my wonderful FAQ in my sig- the Emaxx one may be down, but there is also one on my website, or the erevo one is basically the same, just a few minor differences due to the size of the lipos you can use on that truck compared to the emaxx.

Its only started shipping just in the last couple of weeks, so supply is very limited- doubt you will see too many in smaller LHS either due to price, and most stores being nitro orientated still. I'd say get it from Mike if he has any instock, or one of the other larger stores like Amain hobbies, Towerhobbies or ImpaktRc.
