Looking for shocks. - 01.15.2009, 11:39 AM

This question has been posted in another thread, but is kinda buried among the other posts, so I thought I'd put in a "formal" request in a new thread.

I need shocks that are:

- 130-140mm long fully extended, mounting hole center to mounting hole center.
- Have between 35-40mm of travel/throw/range.
- Big bore design, but can be a max of 35mm in diameter including springs.

I was looking at LST2/Aftershock shocks, but those are ~160mm long! They would be perfect otherwise.

Does anyone know of any item that meets these requirements?

BRIAN, I just measured my muggy shock shafts vs the lst shafts. Lst shaft (87mm) is 9mm longer than muggy shaft (78mm) too bad sorry thought you may be able to use muggy shafts.

Bump.

Still looking. My LHS has a limited stock for me to go check them out in person, so I'm relying on the collective experience/wisdom of the members here. I figure between everyone's collection, there must be something that will fit what I'm looking for...

Why not just use LST shocks and put 25mm of fuel tubing under the shock piston?

The muggy shocks are what you want. 138mm center to center on the eyes, 100mm compressed. Diameter with springs is just under 35mm.

Because then I wouldn't have the suspension travel anymore. IIRC, there is 45mm of travel, and if I use a 25mm spacer, travel would be reduced to 20mm.

I was really gonna go this route, but I heard something about weak shafts. IIRC, there are Ti replacements, but wasn't sure if they were different lengths. Can you get Muggy shocks with aluminum shock bodies and Ti shafts pre-done, or do you have to buy the shocks and upgrades? I looked but didn't find anything. And I don't know what cross-fits between the Muggy/LST/Aftershock.

Those would be perfect for length/travel, but I want bigger bore.

Someone had a nice set of aluminum LST2 shocks on ebay (4 for $50), but when I found out there were 165mm long, I couldn't use them.

Robert from InnovativeRc told me he was going to make Muggy shafts for his shocks (he makes aluminium LST shocks for the savage). Maybe that'll be something for you. Won't be the cheap route though.
Also center to center the LST2 shocks are 150mm max and not 165mm center to center.

The aluminum bodies for the Muggy shocks are only available separately. They do not make TiNi shafts for the Muggy either. I cut down some LST2 TiNi shafts and threaded them.

Well, that makes a big difference! I asked the guy selling them to measure and said hole to hole, but he must have measured end to end. I hope he still has them; they're 4 brand new Al LST2 shocks for $50...

Are you guys sure the lst shocks are all the same size ? or maybe the rear muggys are longer, I bought some lst2 tini shafts and they fit on 1 pair but not the other. I could be wrong, They are in the garage and its way too butt cold to go there, but they fit on something muggy, of course you would need to buy 4 pairs then. ( I should research before I post but I am far too lazy)

I have some ofna rear shocks that are about 127mm center of eye to eye. I really dont know what buggy they came off of though. You probably unthread the bottom rod end and get 130mm. I was (am) going to use them for a rock crawler project.

OK, I got those LST2 shocks in the mail, and man they are big! They look good on the XT8, but getting them to work will require some pretty major mods to the rear shock tower. I'd like to avoid that if possible, so I'm gonna look for some other alternatives.

Here is a pic of some of the shocks I have for comparison:

From left to right: XT8 front shock, 808 front/rear shock, Mugen MBX5 rear shock (same length as the XT8 rear shocks), and an LST2 front/rear shock.

The LST2 do fit width-wise but are a tad too long without tower mods. If I compress them to fit, I lose the travel I want (max suspension travel as this is mostly for bashing).

So, the search continues. I'm looking for bore size like the 808 shocks (or larger), have hole-to-hole length 140-145mm, and have shock travel of around 40-45mm.

I still think the Muggy shocks are what you need, I have the rod ends buried, If you don't screw them as tight as mine you should get 140mm length and 40mm travel, probably as close as you will ever get to your target.

Are these what you are talking about: http://cgi.ebay.com/Team-Losi-Muggy-...3A1%7C294%3A50

They seem to be the same size as the LST2 shocks...
