2200 Motor Runs Hot. - 04.20.2009, 09:55 PM

I have a MMM and a 2200 combo in a Losi 8. The motor seems to get real hot to the touch. Dont have a temp gun to get exact temp. The fan on the esc Rarely comes on so the esc isnt getting real hot. Its all in a Losi 8 with a 48 tooth steel spur. I have a 13, 15, and 16 pinion and changing doesnt seem to make a difference in the motor temp. 4 cell lipo and settting on the MMM are brakes at 20%, 50% punch control, and 0/low timing. What causes them to run hot or is it normal.

Try the stock normal timing setting, 4 pole motors seem to run better with the normal setting.

Fox, get a temp gun......that way your not guessing what your temps are. After that then play with your timing and gearing.

+1 on the temp gun! You are shooting in the dark without it.

You know 120F or 140F will seem hot to touch. How long can you keep your finger on the motor? Good temp material is some spit. Use it and see if how long it take for it to evaporate.

Your way to hot if it does evaporate though. Using the breaks a lot seem to heat up the castle motors more than anything. On pavement in front of my house where I have to use the breaks to almost a complete stop before turning around, my 2650 gets up to around 150-160 after 10 minutes. On grass with the same gearing, ande very little breaking, temps are much cooler - about 140 even with 5s. When you do get a temp gun, be sure to measure the temp of the sticker on the endbell to get accurate readings. Measuring from the exposed aluminum on the fins will not yield accurate readings.

Got a temp gun and played with it some Today. Lipo stayed right at 100-105 esc stayed around 140 and motor slowly went up to 170 and I quit there. Ran it pretty good for about 12 minutes. Fan never kicked on.

I turned the timing back to normal and turned the brakes down a little and it didnt seem to help. It was about 85 degrees or a little more out today so it was warm. Gearing is still 13/48.

Will to low gearing cause it to run hot also?

Gearing too low (undergearing) will heat a motor alot.. DO you have any holes in your body for cooling?

I have the Losi 8ight-E body that has the 2 scoops on each side. Ill go up a bit on the pinion tomorrow and try it again. If that doesnt help ill run it without the body and see if that helps any.

Doesn't castle say that 170 is ok on the motor temp?

We are running 12 tooth on the outdoor tracks and 10 on the indoor tracks on a 2200. Yesterday after a 20 min main an 8ight with the 12 Tooth was 170. Gearing it down has not heated up our motors check the car for binding. Lowest timing also is what we run I run a Neu 1515 2.5 d in a truggy with a 14 and it is barely warm after a 20 minute main. Brakes will warm it up.

Sometimes I think that people who run these and say their motor runs cool live in Alaska or something, my Savage flux (which everyone says runs cool) has been to 165 during a run on the motor running 2 * 2s Lipo and 20t pinion (DX3S temp sensor on can) mind you it was 93 degrees out and that was 13 minutes into a run.

There are more variables than gearing and timing, climate, terrain, tyres, how heavy your throttle finger is, they all play a part.
