Hyperion PSU question - RC-Monster Forums

Hey all,
I wondering if my old pc psu i converted into a charger psu will be able to charge a 6s 5000mah at 1C. The PSU is a 12v 15 a and i will be using a HYPERION EOS0610I charger. If not whats the min wattage i need at 12v to charger the battery at 1c?

I was thinking that the battery needs 111 watts to charge and hopefully ill be getting about 75 percent efficiency that's 138.75 watts which is within my psu specs. Is this correct? Would a 300 watts pc psu work?

That battery should only be charged at 5amps anyway. As long as the powersupply can deliver 5amps at 12v then you should be fine.

Sorry but incorrect - It will need 5amps at 25.2V as it is a 6s pack - Assuming charger is 80 effecient then it will draw 5amps * 25.2 / 11.5 * 1/0.8 = 13.7amps...

11.5V as the 12v rail will drop.... In reality this is close the the PSU's limit...

Yeah, a computer power supply will not maintain a solid 12v rail, and as the voltage drops, the charger's built-in power supply will try to draw more current to compensate. When converting PC power supplies, I always try to boost the 12v line as close to ~14.5v as possible. This thread talks about the various ways this may be achieved, depending on the design.

And, this page will help you figure out the power supply you'll need. Since you're only looking for a supply that will charge that specific pack, don't use the drop-down list to select your charger (if it is even in there); just enter your data in the fields.

If your looking for a decent power supply for a hyperion i suggest http://cgi.ebay.com/24V-DC-6A-145W-R...3A1%7C294%3A50, its the roughly the same one I use on my EOS610i duo, and I can charge 2 3s 5k zippy's at the same time at max charge rate and the ps doesn't even flinch, also it "says" its 24v @ 6A but really its 22v-32v @ 6A, I run mine at 26v.

That looks good, or i can get for that price a 500Watt pc psu and mod that. Does anyone know which one would be better?
