I ran my MMM on 10S - 05.26.2009, 06:19 PM

Like the title says. At the track this weekend, I pop two 5S lipos in the truck to practice, I was in a hurry to get to the driver's stand since there was a couple spots open and instead of using my parallel harness, I plugged them in series. The truck ran and I was a little surprised of the power it had.I was at around 1/8th throttle and I was over shooting the biggest jumps
I did four laps before the truck just stopped. I take it back to the pit and realize the mistake I made as soon as I take off the lid. I temped the motor, 212 degrees. I temped the ESC, 146 degrees. I temped the lipos, 128 degrees. I was geared for 40 mph on 4S. I let everything cool down for 45 minutes and put two 2S lipos in series. The truck ran like nothing happened. I hope I didn't weaken the motor or ESC, I'm afraid that I might have some problems soon because of my mistake.

What do you guys think? Other than I was an idiot

There is a TVS device that is set to trip just a little higher than 6s voltage (~26v IIRC), so you most likely popped that device, but you should have noticed a larger than normal spark when it blew. And the main caps are only rated for 35v (10s is 42v freshly charged). It's a good think component manufacturers design in a bit of overhead, but who knows what else you overvolted!

Well that's not very encouraging. I guess the smart thing to do would be to send it in for servicing. Question is, am I that smart?

Can I check that TVS device myself to see if it's blown? Would it be noticeable? Where is it located on the board? Lots of questions eh!

Thanks Brian

If it isn't broke, don't fix it. Run it.

If it is running fine then as my Dad used to say, "If it ain't broke don't fix it." Do you have a back up if it does die?

You're pretty lucky indeed, I read the neodyum magnets in the rotor of the motor get demagnetized at 200°.

Appearantly not always :p

Or maybe they partly demagnetized and the motor has become a bit weaker? Hope not.

Wow. That depends on the guality of the motor, good thing you didnt shatter the rotor...

I Say buy a lower kv motor and run it on 10s more often.

Castle says their motor will survive 200*, but stick to 175-185 for a bit of comfort zone. You are very lucky, But I'd almost have to try it again

you must treat your MMM nicely like i do ;)
it's all about the amp draw baby!!....but CONGRATS TO CASTLE ON THIS ACHIVEMENT!!!
and as for your ESC....i'd wait (if you dont have too many races comming up) till it blows up..then see if castle will repair it for you (tell em what kind of feat it pulled off ;) ) and i reckon they would :)

^^ Good point, they might not warranty it, but i'm sure they'd like to see what it looks like, after that
