What do you think? Keep or sell? -
05.31.2009, 02:35 PM
Ok, I just had my 3rd MM ESC to mess up on me in my rustler and this is my 2nd or 3rd motor that i'm on now. I've had 2 LiPo's go bad in that car (not doing anything wrong. thay've never gotten hot, their voltage never got too low untill a cell started going bad, i've never touched + to -, i've always stored them at around 6.5-6.8v, and haven't abused them in any way). My rustler is just a very unreliable car for me. The past year i haven't gotten but one full charge threw it without something messing up (it's usually the electronics). So i'm tired of it, my e-maxx runs much better so far and it needs new batts and diffs so i'm really thinking of sending the MM stuff back, fixing/replacing it, selling it, selling the electronic, and then selling the rustler as a roller to get money out of it to fix my e-maxx or to get a mini e-revo to replace it. I bet the e-revo will run much better and be more reliable.
So what do you guys think i should do?

What is your setup in the rustler? The MM should be able to handle it easily! What electronics and all are you running? Something sounds fishy....

Bad servo? It may be overworking the MM bec?
I have had great success with MM escs, probably had 10-12 of them and they have held up to almost everything that I could throw at them (save for a 7xl on 5s...)

Servo's just fine. and i have the MM bec disabled to reduce heat and get the servo to move faster.

My gearing is 15/90 and temps haven't been very high. my first MM ESC hit 250 a couple times and the motor hit 230 a few times as well and nothing ever happened. it ran at those temps for a couple months before i got the FLM tranny case and got the temps down a lot. after that it ran for about another year before the ESC went out. got a new ESC and it ran for about half a year before the motor failed out of noware and in return the ESC went with it. i got the motor and ESC replaced at the end of last summer and it's run well since them, even with 2 trackpowers and a 9xl in my maxx. the water damage to the stock reciever mad me replace it with a futaba receiver and it ran fine with that setup for a wile and then just now went out again

The first time the motor went over 200* it was dead and/or dying. It was all downhill from there. Was the 9XL in the Rustler? Sounds like it was wayyy underloaded and BL doesn't run efficiently with little/no load on it.

I think you're geared too slow on that motor. You're at ~40mph with 50K rpm. I think if you switched to the 5700 or even the 4600 and re-geared for 40mph it would run much better. That or throw a 25T pinion on there and get used to driving 70mph. At least it would run cooler!

geared any higher than 15/90, the ESC starts to run very hot! when the ESC hit 250, it was geared at 19/90 with a cutout on the body to move air over it to cool it down

I would ditch the 7700kv for the 5700kv or 4600kv like previously stated. Both motors will run cooler and be easier on the system while still allowing a 3s for some higher speed runs if wanted.

i would keep it. toss it in a closet and close the door for a while, and come back to it later. you won't get anywhere close to what you put into it if you part it out, and it may be a fun 'project' car someday when you're more objective about it.
i've regretting selling a handful of cars... including a $2500 SuperMaxx and a $2000+ crawler. seemed like a good idea at the time, but i should've kept them.

my rustler hasn't been ran since december becouse i had it's battery to go out. My e-maxx hasn't been run for a few months eather becouse diffs, battery, and i had to get a 2.4ghz radio system for it so it wouldn't clitch and shred everything in the drivetrain but going 100% foward to 100% backward to 100% forard again in a few miliseconds.
besides, my e-maxx is more powerfull, a lot better off road, can take a bigger hit(all rpm arms and FLM bulks/chassis), goes just a tad faster, and can do a backflip from a standstill. the one thing the rustler does better is turn and not flip(witch the maxx can flip itself back over by hitting gas/brake/gas/brake). as far as money, i should be able to but a new e-revo vxl for the same as the rustler should sell for. i'm a club member at tower so i can get the e-revo for 240 and a new MM 7700kv cambo goes for 200 (posibly minus a lil to fix/replace it from castle) and then shurly i could get more than the rest of the money for selling the car.
