Talking Hyper STe 1/12 Questions - 04.29.2009, 06:18 PM

You probably saw my other thread asking if the CRT.5 with a RCM chassis or the Hyper STe was better and people said that either one would be fine so I'm going with the Hyper STe because it's only $199 total. I have a pretty good idea of what speed I want and what I'll be doing with it. I'm looking for around 40mph and I'll spend most of my time bashing. The jumps won't be anything that amazing when I'm driving at my house prob nothing over 8 feet. I'm basically looking for something a little bit bigger than my RC18T yet small enough for me to have fun in the small area I have to drive.

Where I'll be driving 80% of the time:

15 by 20 area that I might make a few jumps for. It's in my backyard so if I can't drive in the front yard or street I'll have a small backup place.

Won't do much here but some speed runs on the gravel. I loved watching my friends Pede fly down this. It's smooth on the sides but is pretty rough in the middle.

Normally have 2 cars parked here but around 25% of the time it's empty so I could drive in the gravel some.

Just a pictures showing both the above 2 pictures together. I would probably spend 15% of my time driving here.

This is my small dirt front yard. My dad is a landscaper so there will almost always be a dirt pile for me to carve a jump out of and I have some plastic skateboard jumps and I'm going to make some wood ones this summer. The only thing I would do here is get speed and then jump in this area so I land in dirt and not on asphalt. Around 55% of my time will be spend driving here.

This is the street that doesn't have much traffic so I could do plenty of speed runs.

Other direction of the street. All of the remaining time would be spend here doing speed runs or gaining speed for jumps in the front yard.

Now for the questions:

Do you think this will be able to hold up to the bashing I'm going to be doing at least 80% of the time?

I know it's a new car but do you think that it will have a little bit of aftermarket support? (Just in case there is a weak spot or something)

Do any other bodies fit? (The stocker is ok but I don't like how it has the mold for a pipe)

What is the size of the battery tray?

My proposed set-up:

Motor

I know it's not the best but for $30 you can't go wrong. Some of the reviews claim people running them in 1/8 buggies with good luck so a Hyper STe 1/12 should be a walk in the park.

Battery
http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...0mAh_3S1P_25C_

I keep hearing such great things about these batteries so I thought I would use one for my build.

ESC
http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=8993

Kinda iffy about this ESC but it's made by HobbyKing which makes the Zippy packs and from what I understand the eZRun ESC's so I'm hoping it would be just as great. I'm going to wait for some reviews or other members to try it first though. If this is a no-go then I'll have to get a MM or maybe a MM-Pro if they are out by the time I need to get an ESC.

I hope you can help me decide on what to get and most importantly if this will suit my needs.

(Sorry if the pictures are too big)

Thanks in advance,
Nicholas

Honestly right from the start i would go with a mm esc. for the money you cant beat them. They are great little esc,s. Can handle up to 4s with the correct mods, And on 3s run perfect. As for the motor it should do the job perfect along with the battery you picked out.

Why not just get a Castle 4600 sidewider combo.. figure 120 and your done, and good to 3s as well. You could also go w/ the traxxas velineon system which would be a little better for about the same price as well.. that is if you are trying to save money. I'd say go w/ the 50mm Medusa's and never look back, much much better of a motor.. and get a velineon or MM esc. I just snagged a velineon off ebay for 50.00, can't go wrong w/ that, it's every bit as good as a mamba other than being less the program options, it runs more effeciently on 3s lipo too.. no external BEC needed.

Honestly I would stay away from the castle motor and the traxxas as well they have 1/8 shafts and do tend to break as I have broken both. A pebble can cause havoc on those shafts. And with no gear cover it will happen sooner or later. Stay with a mm and the motor you choose or a sidewinder and you will be set

I guess I'm going to get a Mamba Max and the HobbyCity motor. If the motor dies then I'll get a Medusa but for only $30 it's worth a shot... right? What tires should I get since I'll be driving on-road most of the time but I still want to have some traction off-road?

Well those 2 things dont really exist. Well if you went to traxxas rustler wheels and went with gladators. Or dirt works, Dirt hawgs maybe.

But again that all depends how you want it setup.
i love my 2.2 rear buggy dirt hawgs they are more of a street tread but not that good for offroad.

You have alot of options.

I guess I'll get a set of the Gladiators and a set of Dirt Hawgs.

I heard the hobbycity motors run hot... I'd just get a medusa and mamba max. It's a tested setup and is proven to work. I'm not saying your electronics wont, but you'll be happier in the end at least with the medusa...

The Losi x3000 buggy tires are my favorite for these 1/12 scale trucks.. very awesome on most tracks. Ofna dish's are only about 12bucks for a 4 pack as well. best way to go iMO. When buying the traxxas bugggy parts keep in mind the rears don't use a hex at least not on the ones I've gotten.

A Medusa isn't worth $100 extra to me... I'm getting the MM and I'm going to get the HobbyCity motor to start off with. Are the Ofna dish rims 2.2?

If a Medusa isn't worth $100 dollars then I don't know what is... Medusa motors are the best bang for the buck there is. Only other thing in the same price/performance ratio are the CC/Neu knockoffs. Those two are some nice motors.

The proline truck M2 compound Gladiators are a popular choice for this class. I'm running some black rpm wheels with a 12mm hex on my crt .5.

If anything those junk hobbycity motors are not worth the 40 they cost.. LOL 3 of them are not worth 1 medusa. Anyway don't want to get into a this vs that vortex so enough said.

Those OFNA 12 BBT's are a perfect fit (yes 2.2)

I'm still going to go with the HC motor. It's hard to justify paying $250 for a MM/Medusa system considering the kit itself if only $199. The Mamba Max and a 3500kv HC "L" motor seams like a good budget system. Then IF the motor does die then I'll spend the green and get the Medusa.

hyper st mini questions - 05.05.2009, 11:51 PM

it will hold up ok but i wouldnt spend alot of time running on that coarse gravel, way hard on the chassis and arms.It will have aftermarket after a wile. for your body alternatives ofna has ordered 100 proline crowd pleasers for the.5 and they fit the ST perfectly and you can order them from nitro house or ofna.Im running ofna 1/12 truggy dishesthey will fit the hyper and i would maybe run proline r3 buggystep pins should work great on the grass and in the loose rough stuff .the battery box is a little wider than a hard case 2s and is mounted on its side.im gonna put one of mikes in mine so i can lay it flat.

I would personally get the hobbycity controllers before I got their motors.
