Red face Budget Setup for Hyper STe - 06.29.2009, 11:20 PM

Hey, I'm going to get a Hyper STe next and was hoping that the budget setup I'm considering would work.

I'm turning 16 at the end of the summer so hopefully I'll be able to get a job so I'll have some cash flow. The problem is I get my license in February so I need to save up for a car.

My RC18T is my only RC right now and I really want something a little bit bigger and for only $160 you can't really go wrong... (right???)

I saw this video of a E Revo running a EZRun 60A ESC and a HC 1900kv 9XL on 4S and I thought, hell if it can push that around the Hyper STe should be a walk in the park.

So here is my proposed setup:
EZRun 60A ESC
HobbyCity 7L 3000kv Motor
Turnigy 20C 5000mah 3S LiPo
BlueBird 5.8kg .10 MG Servo
As for the Radio I'm just going to use my current radio.

I know the MM/Medusa combo will be much better but I much rather put the money saved toward my 1/1 car.

I heard the Hobbycity motors run really hot and don't produce much power.

I think you'll want to run more voltage. You won't get much power out of your system with that. I bet it'll go a cool 30mph.

I'd go 25-30c 3000-5000mah 3-4s lipo with about the same motor and maybe a better speed controller. I run a flightpower 30c 3300mah pack and it's great. You should look around for a used medusa/MM and have some quality componets. You can save 20 bucks and get the hxt 12kg servo and spend it on a used medusa.

And why do you have two accounts?

My bad I linked to the 3S but accidentally put a 2.

I have 2 accounts because of the TheToyz issues ;)

Yeah, I think even feigaos are better than the "spinning toaster of death" HC motors. Most systems can get by with ok batteries and speed controls, but a cheap motor can ruin everything. Not sure what to suggest for a motor, medusa is about the best bet for the price.

Oh Yeah, with the bec disabled. Remove the red wire from the radio plug (don't cut it) and run an external bec or rx pack. People have run mamba max's on 5s and I even saw a guy with a 6s MM with a tekno electric clutch in his 8ight. I'm content with 4s though.

Stick to 2 or 3s in the ste. I run mine on 2s and it does fine. More battery just makes it heavy... Unless you go with a 2500-3000kv pack and a lower kv motor, like 2000-2500. But then you have to mod the MM to handle 4s, and you have extra stuff like the bec. It gets to be a packaging nightmare on the small chassis.

Hyper STe Kit - $160
Mamba Max ESC - $120
Medusa 36-50 3300kv Motor - $125
Turnigy 3S 5K 25C LiPo - $45
MG996 Servo(s) - $30

That from what Ive been told is for the money the best setup. The total is just shy of $500 spending that much on a 1/12 is outragous to me. For the same amount I could buy a E Revo (brushed) or even a Nitro rtr Truggy.

I guess Im going to wait until I get a job to decide what I want to buy next... I'm thi king it would be best to go straight to a 1/8.

Yeah just buy an 1/8 buggy. Much better way to spend your money. Find a clean used roller that already has a motor mount, maybe 100-120, get the hw80 esc and motor combo from HC for 150, and a decent 4s lipo for about 60-75 bucks there too.

Under 400 bucks with a decent servo. That is the way to go.

May I suggest upgrading to a HW150A. It will probably cost 50 bucks more.

I had a truck that weighed 4.3Kg geared for around 45mph with a feigao 7L on4S. It ran ok but gets really hot at just below 60C.

How I am using a HW150A with a KB45 2300Kv motor geared to the same speed and the HW150A is just lukewarm (truck is now 4.6Kg). Probably 40C at most I did a measurement before and it was 38C but the fets are probably hotter than this. Ambient temp was around 30-34. And do avoid the KB45s. My KB45 gets to around 50-55C just doing speed runs. Race condition will probably get it to heat up more.

Try to avoid iron loss with cheap motors. Stick below 40000rpm and u will find your motor to be alot cooler.
