School a Newb...what is wrong with MaxAmps? - 07.04.2009, 06:34 PM

This is a serious question...I am completely new to brushless technology...LiPo specifically.
I have been doing alot of reading here and the consensus is MaxAmps is a big no no

Why?? Overpriced...bad technology? Bad business? What makes them inferior to other brands.

Please school me..From my short time on this site, It's obvious you guys know your stuff.

For the most part, it is believed that they overate their packs, meaning that something they rate as 25c could really be 20c. Their prices are also higher compared to similar packs.

MaxAmps 35c 4200 MAH 6s pack, $339: http://www.maxamps.com/Lipo-4200-222-Flight-Pack.htm

FullyMax 35c 4400 MAH 6s pack, $239: http://www.impaktrc.com/product_info...oducts_id=4545

PolyQuest 25c 5000 MAH 6s pack, $294: http://www.rc-monster.com/proddetail...pq25c6s5000mah

Hope this helps.

It boils down to the fact that you can get a better pack cheaper elsewhere.

Maxamps do alot of advertising and that money has to come from somewhere...

Ok..I guess I had the jist of it then...I thought maybe it was something deeper and more sinister.

Dare I ask about their new LiFe4 green packs?

I have had issues with certain members of their staff, but I will leave that alone here. You can find a better product at a better price, such as Mike's lipos in the rcm store. They will live up to their specs, something maxamps is a bit hit or miss on. Maxamps is well know due to advertising, and in less demanding setups their product perform fine. Price is still very high though, which is enough reason to stay away IMO.

I am sure the new green packs will be available elsewhere cheaper, and maxamps appears to overrate them compared to current a123 performance.

The hyperion g3 packs seem to be top of the pile right now, and the prices are very fair on them.

Success can be had with Maxamps. And they have pros that help balance the cons. Like purchasing one of their excellent well priced IMO chargers that then give you a membership discount which can help with everything else for example. I have the newer MA 6500mah 30c water-resistant hard packs that I like alot. They aren't evil. As I'm sure Linc would tell you.

My experience with them is that they are just far too expensive. I have a 4700mah 7 cell nimh that I can only charge to maybe 4000mah on a good day. Not a huge deal, but I'd like to see it get closer to 4700mah. If you want to spend huge dollars, go with a battery that has enerland cells or something.

Just an opinion here.
I have never actually checked the ratings on the maxamp packs I own, so I don't really know if they are what they say they are. They have always performed well and have had no issues with them.
Bad technology= no
Bad business=no
Seems to me , most people do think they are over priced. I am not in the business and don't know what costs are involved in advertising / assembly/ shipping, or anything for that matter.
I do support my local hobbyshop (they are not the cheapest out there) but they have and will hopefully be there for me in the future. That is worth alot to me.
I did contact maxamps on behalf of my club for a banner for our track (they did not know my purchase history) They sent a nice full size banner no questions asked !!!! Most other mfg's either did not return my calls/ emails or wanted a minimum of 20 dollars. A nice perk IMO

You can get the hyperion line of chargers from many other online stores, RCM for example. And Maxamps charges more for the hyperion chargers than anyone else I have found. To be honest I have price checked their products and they are generally more expensive than anyone else for the same product.

Like I said before, all of the advertising has to be paid for somehow. When I was on the phone with Mike recently he told me how much his ad in the few mags costs him monthly. Factoring that info and looking at the scope of MA's advertising, they drop a considerable amount on advertising, like more than I make monthly...

There are better products available out there, and the prices are not any more expensive. MA started by selling a slightly over rated product at a decent price, and as long as you were not trying to run a larger scale truck the lipos would survive. As time went on their prices went way up, but the quality has remained the same.
