Cutting down a motor shaft help needed -
08.09.2009, 10:21 AM
Hey all... I have a 1515 2.5d Heli motor with fan that I'm putting in my ERBE or my XXL Conversion, but the shaft is too long. I need to cut some of it off.
I don't know for sure if there is a "standard" length that is used for Truck motors? From what I can tell, the shaft should stick out from the can about 13/16th's of an inch. Which means I need to cut just a hair under 1/2" off the shaft.
Now, I could drill a hole thru the motor plate, to allow for the extra length, but that might be a dumb idea. I don't know which is worse, cutting the end of the shaft down, or drilling a hole in the plate to allow for the extra length. I also need to grind a flat spot on the shaft for a pinion.
I tried to mark the shaft last night for where I need to cut it, by wrapping some tape around it. But I can't get the tape to stick. Not even Gorilla tape. So, what now? Plus, even if I could, the tape can slide around. Maybe I can put a Sharpie mark on the shaft good enuff for me to see where I'm suppose to cut, and just cut. I plan on using a dremel with a cut off wheel to do the job.
Another question... should I be concerned with the shaft heating up while being cut? I know I need to block all the holes to the motor to keep debris out, but I wasn't sure about the heat. I have a wire heatsink I can put on the shaft if it's a big deal. I'm hoping I"m able to cut thru this pretty quickly, minimizing heat.
So, any advice you have for me, to do this job right, would be appreciated!
