Hey guys I plan to race a vintage Optima mid SE. Just have no idea what size batt and what system to run on it. I thought a Velineon was a good system to start with on 2S possibly. Does this sound good?? I have no idea the gearing, so I have no idea what pinion to use to see what mph it will fall at. I am shooting more 37-39mph which is what I need on the open style track we run on. Any thoughts??? Should I go higher KV or lower KV or just higher voltage...maybe 3S?

I have the Turbo optimia mid SE and love it look foward to seeing what you put together... mine is nitro so i cant help you though just wanted to say you have a great car 8-)

I didn't know they made them nitro. I have only ever seen them with electric.

man i remember those me and my brother both got one for xmas, someone made a kit to make a truck with 2.2 rims body posts and i put a parma s-10 blazer body on it, it was great buggy - i would stay on the mild side of your setup brushless motors where 15 years away when this came out, try not to over power it parts are not as available any more

Actually quite a few parts still are3 avialable, plus you can use some of the Kyosho Lazer parts as well.

I used to drool over advertisments for these in the tower talk magazines (tower hobbies mag)

I'd imagine these buggies will probably still hold thier own pretty well but I'd also suggest a mild brushless setup.

I see nothing but driveline failure in your future. I'd go with a cc sidewinder esc so you could have punch control and limit the initial shock. a velineon motor would be decent.

agreed

i have one and i wouldnt even consiter putting a 19t brushed motor in it, take a look at how the chain goes together and you will understand why you cant run anything with torque

its a very cool buggy, you would be better off selling it and useing the money to buy something more moddern if you want to run a brushless system

The early optima's and Javelin's were chain drive. The new models came with hardened gears and belt drive like the current cars do now. This car has the belt drive system as well.

I kinda agree with the others, I have 2 of them, and wouldn't really consider putting too hot of a setup in it, 40mph, yikes. I just don't think it would last long at that. They do have repop belts for them now, but diffs, and whatnot I'm not too sure of. Unless you have found a different source, just some a-arms are 25 or 30 bucks. I would just go with a mild sensored setup like a gtb with a 10.5 on 2s. How fast are the other cars running in the vintage class?

Most are running 36-38mph. 4600KV CC setups or 5700KV setups.

like I said, a cc esc w/ lots of punch control. the cc 4600 motor would also have less torque than the velineon 3500, so that may be a good choice. IMO the 5700 will just run hotter.

I ran a tamiya boomerang w/ a cc 4600 setup and the diffs lasted about 2 minutes. I miss my boomerang:(

Hmm guess I will look at the CC4600 then. Looks like that may be the ticket.
