DX2.0 lipo - 01.31.2010, 12:20 AM

the only real advantage i see to running a lipo pack in the DX2.0 instead of 8 AA's, is shaving a bit of weight.

Im looking at getting this Tx pack for my DX2.0, the Rhino 2620 Tx pack. Im unsure though, how much 8 x AA's weigh. Because if they end up weighing the same then i wont worry about fitting a lipo.

I've also seen elsewhere, someone fitting a Turnigy 1600mah 3s 20c to a DX2.0. I checked & the 1600 weighs a little less than the 2620. But would the 1600 still offer more runtime compared to AA's, NiMH or alkaline.

So if any of you have swapped out AA's for lipos in your Tx's, was there a vast difference in weight?

Most of the time, the weight is not really a factor unless the difference is huge. The biggest advantage to using lipo is the flatter discharge curve and far less self-discharge if sitting on the shelf for a couple of weeks.

It also greatly depends on whether or not the radio has some sort of voltage regulator that reduces the input voltage.

So, for example, if it's reduced to 5v, and full AA's = 12v and AA's that are worn down to about 1V = 8V, then you still have "full power."

If there's no voltage regulator, than as the AA's wear down you lose power/range, so the lipo really helps as the lipo will hold its 11.1V nominal for a long, long time and right as it's about to die, the voltage will fall really fast.

I LiPoed mine for the low self discharge and get longer runs as a side effect, I replaced 2650 NiMhs with 2200 LiPos so it shouldn't last as long in theory but in practice its good for a 2day weekend race now and I used to have to charge up at some point.

2 of my transmitters feel better lighter and one I had to add lead weight to make it balance right again, but even for the 2 that do feel better lighter its not a big deal, if someone offered me a set of cells for free that weighed nothing at all but had the discharge characteristics of NiMhs I wouldn't take them.

OK I would take them, but I would keep LiPos in my TX and make a 3D indoor flyer for the weightless cells that will stay up all day.
