Best setup for Truggy. - 06.21.2010, 01:58 AM

Hi, i am just thinking of converting my Truggy to brushless.
As I am new to this brushless setup as I have always had nitro, i am not too sure what to go for.

Basically it is for racing. i want to run it on either 5s 0r 6s
I have been doing a bit of searching around and have decided on these two brands of motors.
Tekin motor/esc. or the castle creations motor/esc.

Just not sure wich motor to go with.
The Castle Creations basically only have two to chose from.
The Tekin have a few more.
I guess also while I am here, what size gear I will need for the motor.
( The spur is a 50T)

If anyone can help me out here it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Don't forget to check the clubs / competition guidelines if you want to race in a league. There are leagues were you can only run 4S, so check that before deciding on how many cells you want to run.

Concerning the Tekin vs MMM .. some like Tekin, some like MMM. My personal opinion is that neither of them are bad. For motors you can/should also check out Neu (Castle Creations motors are based on these Neu motors, but Neu tend to perform better).

I run the MMM 2200kv combo on 4S, but if I had to do it over again I'd run 5S or 6S on a lower kv motor. As long as your club/track allows it you have the right idea.

on 5s a Tekin 1700kv motor will do nicely w/the Rx8 esc and it is sensored so it will be super smooth

1. MBX-6 T8 1900KV, RX8 ON 4S
2. MBX-5T 1520, MMM ON 5S
3. MBX-5 ONROAD CONVERSION 1515, MMM ON 5S
4. MRX-3 ON ROAD CONVERSION 1512, MMM ON 6S
5. TEN T 2650 T8, MMP ON 3S

Hi, Thanks for the info.
I have decided to go with the Tekin motor and Rx8 esc combo.

Just trying to decide on what motor now.
I really want to run either 5s or 6s.

This might sound pretty basic to most but, Next question is what is the noticable deferance between say the 1700kv motor and one say the 2250Kv motor.

Will both these motors perform well on 5s or 6s. ?
If I latter on go back to say a 4s pack will both motors still perform the same.

Just really after a good setup motor for racing.

Cheers.

If you gear both setups for the same speed the lower kv, higher voltage (1700kv on 6S for example) setup will draw less current and you should be able to boost your runtimes a bit and stay cooler.

The 1700kv will do best on 5-6S, the 2250kv best on 4S. If you decide to change later the motors could still be made to work, but it wouldn't be optimal and gearing might be limited.

Thanks for all the info.
Has been a great help.
thinking of going with the Tekin 1700kv motor/combo on 6s.

Was going to run Zippy Flight Max.
Would the 5000mah 6s1P 40C be a good choice for this setup.

Also what would be a good gearing setup for the Truggy be?
At the moment with nitro it is running a 50T Spur and 13T bell.
Want to stay with the 50T spur just not sure what size I need to go to on the motor.

Thanks again.

13t should put you in the ballpark for racing speeds with that motor/voltage.

Thanks, wasn't to sure if it was the same gearing that i am curently running using nitro gearing (13T/50T)

Cheers.

Might want to check tekin on their return policy go with 5s 1700 on the castle 6s is for bashing good fun and hard to control on 6s but fun

Looks like 5s is the way to go with the 1700 then.

Why not 6S + 1350 Kv ? You will draw even lower current on your ESC and the smaller Kv will provide more controlability at low speed.

MBX5T Prospec MMv3 NEU-CC 1520/1Y 6S "Overkill Flying machine" ;)

Brushless, what else ?

Just wanted to note.. temp differences are not that great on a truggy setup correctly going from 4s to 6s. If you have a weak ESC running higher voltage will keep the avg amp draw down but not peaks... so in a word if you run a motor matched for your ESC and vehicle size you won't see any heat issues or any extra run time with such a little voltage change. Also assuming race setups of equal speeds around 40mph or just under. Now with that said you have to realize the differences in lipo's for mah and physical size, you have to reduce your mah when raising voltage to keep the same reasonable pack weight but with the higher voltage you see more run time on the reduced mah, so you typically wash in almost all cases unless you were comparing a super small and light weight 4s 5k battery and going up to a much larger 6s 4k or larger pack. I have run 6s 5s and 4s configs in my truggy and to be honest the setup that has been most reliable and that I win the most races with is a MMM 1y combo in my 8ight-t tekno conversion. I run 4s 35c 6500mAH hyperion lipo's and get 17+ minutes at full speed on my track (race conditions and 3 of 5 have been 1st place finishes)

14.8 x 6500mah = 96200 (best pack size/run time)
18.5 x 5000mah (typical 5s pack) = 92500 (same weight as the 4s 6500 and a touch less run time)
22.2 x 4300mah = 95460 (weighs a touch more than the 4s 6500 (for HQ packs anyway) and has a touch less run time, even more if you are only at 4000mah or less)

Obviously you can't compare mine to someone elses directly as truck weight, drivng style and track all play huge roles in the mah/per minute.. but in the same truck I get the best run times and feel w/ the mmm 1y 4s combo. The other two setups I ran were with a neu 2.5d finned @5s 5k (ran for most of a season last year), and I tried out a medusa 1300kv on 6s for a few days to compare as well.

rather than start a new thread i thought i would piggyback onto this one...

Just got my first truggy (hyper st pro) and started to convert it, all the nitro junk out, servo tray cut, rc monster mount ordered.

Now for a couple of questions...

planning on using a mmm and a 1800kv motor on 4s, 5s, and 6s.

What would you reccomend diff oil wise?

i was planning 30k, 50k, 10k but thats just because i run 3,5,1 in my buggy :P

i only bash, mainly grass and dirt, running proline badlands...

reccomend me diff setups please :D
