Faulty Motor Wiring? - 04.08.2006, 01:37 PM

:035: I just got my 1/8th buggy all set up with a new 9L. I got to program the motor and I get the first beep and nothing else. Now one connector was a little messed up so I went to resolder all the motor plugs, and now the one yellow wire won't talk solder? I use flux etc. but it just falls off (the solder). What is the problem, I tried different types of solder and different techniques but nothing. Now im left with only about an inch or less of wiring sticking out of the motor left, what do I do! I now need more 5.5mm plugs, as somebody seemed to think they were trash and threw out three of the ones sitting on the work bench! Mike, maybe I should just send the motor into you to solder up? I haven't even used it at all.

Well the wires are coated. If you cut it off and tried to resolder it. You are in the coating area. The solder is not likeing that coating. Have you cut the wire off coming out of the motor?

Peace!

I noticed the coating, any way to get that off? Possibly metal sand paper, tried that but i could try it some more.

problem is, that the wires are isolated individually, and it are a lot of thin wires used to make one thick one. so if you sand off the outer layer, only a small amount of wires will make contact. Check if you can peel the wires from eachothter, if this is the case, then the isolator is still on and the wire wasn't stripped.

they use some kind of accid to remove the isolater, perhaps this process didn't took place on that particular wire.

i would highly recommend to never shorten the wires on the motor since there the windings...

Acidum acetylsalicylic (Acidum acetylsalicylicum) or Aspirin. You can get it almost anywhere. But be carefull very nasty stuff to solder with, use good ventilation and then clean all acid leftover with regular flux or water :)

Thanks Artur.

@squee;

a winding isn't made from a solid piece of coper, it's made from all thin wires. On the end, in the plug/connector you really want the all to be shortened, with the BL motors we use the three wires that come out are built up from all smaller wires. (litze)

if im understanding you correctly, why does everybody say not to cut the wires on the motor?

If you cut them to short you can break wires, longer wire allow some flex. If you install connectors on rear endcap and solder windings directly from inside then it would look like Lehner :)

You need to keep wires as short as possible, but it is much easier to do that with ESC-side wires. But if things like mentioned above happened and you facing phase wire bundle which you cannot solder with regular flux because of coating then you need to be very patient and strip every wire in winding bundle (one of 3).

Well Squee, for the reasons Artur is mentioning and to prevent what happens here, not saying that he cut his wires, but you'll get the exact same problems.

Okay what exactly am I suppose to buy and how to use it? Something that I can just dip a few mm of the wires in and be done with? Thanks a lot, I know i'm stupid for cutting the wires, but hopefully I can redeem myself.

You need Aspirin tablets from the pharmacy. Then take one tablet out. Put it on a metal tray/surface. Put one wire from the bundle on the tablet and heat it with the solder iron [keep area well ventilated, the smoke is very nasty]. Once the tablet starts melting, move the wire around on the surface of the tablet until all the coating is gone. After the coating is removed, tinning with solder won't be a problem. Then proceed with the rest of the wires in the bundle. When the last will be done, clean the wires with water, twist them together and apply solder. One motor phase done.

Artur

P.S. In theory (I have never tried that) you can melt couple tablets on the hotplate and then submerge wires and use metal brush... But man smoke will kill you :(

Just a thought - what about sand-blast?

And if this was an instruction about getting rid of headache, you can skip the soldering part and lick the tablet from the metal plate..

Sand blasting; i don't know/doubt if it would reach the inner strings of the copper

plus if you sandblast em you run the risk of getting silica in the motor. that stuff gets everywere.

Alright, I believe I have some swallow pills upstairs, or do I need the chewable ones? I will try this tomorrow night most likely. Thanks for saving me a lot of anxiety

How toxic are these fumes? Face mask necessary? I take it soldering fumes period aren't good, so I'll make sure im awake while soldering this time.
