Lipo Battery reviews - 04.29.2010, 05:10 AM

I think it would be a good idea to have one place where everyone can post their results with different batteries. It would be useful to post voltage, design(ex 2s1p), C rating, actual size, hard or soft shell, price + where from, and how it has performed for you in what vehicle. I'm in the quest to find a decent 2s hard case pack that is reasonably priced, I would have liked something like this to use as a guide.

I have one such battery that I really like but it's a 2 year old Neu, I contacted them and they have no plans to carry a hard case pack again. While reading through RCXtreme I came across an ad for SpeedPowerRC.com I checked out their site and wound up ordering a 2s 5300mah 30C hardcase pack, with shipping it was $71. I hope this pack performs and wasn't a waste of $71.

I hope that others will post up their experiences to share with everyone.

MaxAmps 2s2p 6000mah 20C soft case aprox $120(3 years ago) Used 2 of these packs in series in an E-Maxx and E-revo and single pack in CRT.5. Performed ok in CRT.5 but lacked punch, In E-Maxx and E-Revo packs where stressed with gearing for aprox 36MPH and puffed.

MaxAmps 2s1p 1550mah 20C soft case $35 (3 years ago) Price went up with the release of the Traxxas mini e-revo. This pack is great in my RC18T, only MA pack that I have ever been happy with, never gets more than slightly warm, great runtime and power, and the cells stay pretty well balanced

NeuEnergy 2s1p + 3s1p 4900mah 25C soft case aprox $160 (for both packs 2 years ago) These batteries where ran in series in my E-revo and packed amazing power, plenty of punch and top end. Packs got a little warm in the E-revo compartments but after modding the "intake scoop" temps came down. Packs never seemed stressed, never puffed or became soft.

NeuEnergy 2s1p 5000mah 25C hardcase $65 (2 years ago) Ran this in my CRT.5 and gained alot over the MA packs, about 5MPH top end without changing gearing. Incredible punch, top end, and runtime. Pack has held up well but the case has been damaged from crashing the CRT.5. Cells are still good though and it is working great in my SC10 now.

RC-Monster 5s1p 4500mah 25C soft case $195 (last year) I purchase 2 of these packs for use in my converted RC8T. Packs performed excellent, plenty of power all around. I have reconfigured these packs now, one is 4s for use in truggy with CC2200kv and the other is 2x 2s for use in my E-maxx and they are still working great

NeuEnergy 4s1p 5500mah 25C soft case $85. This is the new pack I purchased for racing my Truggy this year. I only have a few runs on it so far but it has met my expectations. Great power and runtime and great price.

I have had good results from "blue lipo" from hobbyparts. They have done well by me so far.

i have 4 hobbycity's turnigy 5200mah 30c 2s hardcase packs and run them in my savage flux. they are phenomenal when it comes to punch. they even outperform my 30c neu packs. they take all 5200mah with my lvc set at 3.5v. they don't even get get warm. maybe 10F higher than ambient at most.

i have some 25c 5000mah 3s flightmax packs that have gotten pretty weak in the course of 100 cycles in 1 year. they are about 15c now.

also, i have a 4s 5000mah 20c softcase turnigy lipo and it has held up very nice for the 75 cycles it's seen in my buggy and truggy. it gets only warm and never puffs. i think it is really a 30c pack. it has crazy punch.

They say a good mechanic only needs 2 tools - WD40 & Duct tape. If it moves, and its not supposed to, duct tape. If it doesn't move, and its supposed to, WD40.

I have 20 Zippy packs (2S 500mAh to 4S 5000mAh, 20C to 30C) and 1 Turnigy pack (4S 5000mAh 40C), and they have all been nothing short of amazing! My friend runs Neus, ThunderPowers, and Hyperions, and has recently sold them all and replaced every single one with Zippies and Turnigies!

Any older enerland based 25c pack was good (flightpower, thunderpower, hyperion, polyquest and polyrc). Good packs, and matched their ratings.

The 30c enerland cells were not as good, needed to be at or over 100f to do what they were speced for. But they did if they were warm.

Older 20-25c zippies, iffy quality control on assembly. Otherwise good.

30c zippies, good.

Maxamps, overpriced. And over-speced. Avoid like the plauge (or Harold after booze)

Yea, the only 20C & 25C Zippes I have are the small 2S 500mAh, 3S 500mAh, and 2S 800mAh packs. All of my big Zippy packs (4S 2650mAh up to 4S 5000mAh ) are 30C. Plus I just ordered two new Zippy 4S 5800mAh 30C packs and another Turnigy 4S 5000mAh 40C pack.

And I agree with everything you said!

OK, after the long wait, I finally got a netbook, and dug out my EagleTree! My test vehicle for the time being will most likely be my SC10 with a MMPro and the 1410 1Y SCT motor. I did some live testing with a battery in it just by holding the truck and pushing the back tires into some carpet, the results where pretty impressive. I didn't save the data but I will get a full run in and post the results. Just for giggles I through my MA 1550 2s pack into the truck. It had no punch at all, I didn't really expect much, this is definitely pushing this battery, but I did get a little data out of it and after I put a new connector on my esc in my RC18T I will post a real review of this battery.

MaxAmps 2s 1550mah in SC10

This battery is almost three years old and has at least 200 runs on it.

That pack definitely took a hit at about 40 seconds! Down to like 2.8V/cell. What did you have the LVC set at on the MMP? Or turned it off?

Netbooks are nice, hey? I love mine.

LVC was set to 6V I beleive, I will have to double check. the end of the run I held the truck still, gave full throttle and pushed the tires into the carpet. Again though, keep in mind this is a pack for an rc18t, here it is spinning a motor that ways almost as much as the whole 1/18 truck! Also this pack is about 3 years old with plenty of runs on it.

Here is an actual run in my rc18t geared 55/17 with a Mamba25/5400kv motor. Again this is a MaxAmps 2s 1550mah pack that has seen plenty of use. This wasn't a full run, my apt is big enough to have much fun in for a whole pack, I took less than 350mah out of the pack. I had a peak Wattage of 151. I also held the truck a couple times just to put some load on the pack cause I coudn't even come close to full speed in my apt.

Here is a better run with the RC18T and MA 2s 1550mah pack. I'm not sure why the time is off on the Eagle Tree, it's doubling the time of the run, this was really about 12 minutes not 24. The pack isn't holding voltage all that well and I will attribute that to it's age, it still meets my demands and doesn't get much more than ambient temperature and it doesn't puff at all so I will continue running it.

Here is a run in my SC10 using a MMPro, CC/Neu 1410 1y 81/21 gearing and caliberSC tires. I was running outside in the cold and snow/slush covered driveway. There where a few spots that where bare and I could really hit it hard. The battery is a SpeedPowerRC 2s 5300mah 30C

Again, the run is half the time that it states at the bottom of the graph, not sure why it's doing that. Since these graphs though I have changed my sample rate from 8 to 4 times per second, maybe that will help but if not it should make the graphs easier to read at least

Took the Savage Flux out in the snow for a run today. Running stock other than the gearing, dropped down to 49/17 gearing. The parkinglot here has about 4" of snow covering the whole thing, so this was pretty much nothing but full throttle for 75% of the run. It's also about 25*F out so lipo performance suffers a bit as well. Changing the sample rate fixed the time on the graph. However this was a less than ideal setup for data logging. Since the Flux takes two packs I only had the Eagle Tree plugged into one of them. Now I know that overall that means the voltage being used is double what the reading is as the packs are wired in series. That being said series wiring doesn't increase the capacity of a pack so I don't think the Amp draw doubles.

Lipos are Turnigy 5800mah 25-35C

You are right; amp draw is constant in a series circuit. So, you are seeing half the voltage, but the right current.

Figured you'd know the answer and chime in Brian. For such a heavy truck only running 4s I'm pretty happy with that current draw. I realize that on dry ground where it can hook up better it will draw more. My 10Lb RC8T drew 160+A on 5s geared for about 38MPH, on dry ground
