HPI Rs4 electric conversion help.. - 06.06.2011, 10:26 PM

Hey..

Friend gave me a pretty beat up rs4...and I made it a project to bring it back to life..in electric form (was nitro)...without spending over $50 (Had the electronics, motor mount got on sale..)..

AND..here's the problem...is there anyway to get that pinion to reach the spur gear?

I searched around and found something like this..but it's the wrong size bore for the motor shaft (Castle's 4 pole 5700 is 1/8" I believe)..

http://www.caswellplating.com/buffs/shaft.htm

With some recent efforts..I got the pinion even closer..

While posting this..I might try flipping the spur gear around..if that works..other wise..I still think i'd be about 1/2 an inch short..

Motor mount will not come anymore forward unless I hack away at it..

So..any thoughts?

Thanks!

EDIT:
Have flipped the spur around..about 1/2 an inch away from the pinion touching the spur..starting to hack away the motor mount...but it'll require alot of dremeling....and time...

Just drill a couple new holes in the chassis

edit: I guess looking at the pictures the motor mount might not squeeze in there, hard for me to tell or not.

You could buy some aluminum plate and make an extended chassis for well under $50. Or, make a new motor mount that fits on the existing chassis- also less than $50.

Motor wont squeeze in :/

Dont have the equimpent to make an extended chassis atm either..

Is there a way to extend the motor shaft? I know I've seen them before on bigger motors with 1" shafts..

I wouldn't recommend using a shaft extender unless you can fit a bearing for support near the far end of the shaft. You'll end up breaking them otherwise.

That actually I can do, already have a plan for the bearing supper that the extender that can mount up in no time!
Just need to find an extenter that will work..only has to be 3-4cm long..maybe less.

You could make another shaft for the pulleys/spur gear. Make it longer on the motor side so you can mount the spur on the opposite side of the pulley.

Flipping the spur and a tekno long shank pinion with a 5mm to 1/8th bore reducer might just work. I'd be worried about snapping the motor shaft though.

Alrighty :)

Found a link for a shaft extender that will work..

But as far as the pinion..what would be a ideal number of teeth? spur gear is a 39t.

would 19/39 sound alright? (5700kv 4 pole castle system)

Planning to use a 2200mah 2s 45c lipo..also..would that provide enough amps to the system? If not..I can run to in parallel..can only fit a 100m long battery in the limited space..width is about a little less then 100m..

Looks like the long shank pinion worked fine!

I love you choice in models. I converted one a couple of years ago and is an on going project...it is now a 6s monster. Blew a chunk of foam and wheel off during a bench test.

Testing 6s in my Super RS4. All was well until the rear wheel blew apart. Take a look.
