Basic Charging Question - 01.01.2012, 11:35 PM

Hey guys,

Going to a park sometime next week, for an 'RC day' with a few friends.

Anyways, wanted something that could power my charger so we could just keep going..

I discovered a 24V 16Ah Lead Acid battery that I've left.. alone, in my go-cart..
I also discovered a 12V 7Ah in one of the flashlights that my dad owns (one of those 1 million candle watt power suckers form Costco?)..

Besides tossing them on my Bantam BC6 charger, how else could I charge these guys?

The 12V one has normal terminals (I could charge that via Bantam, just would take ages), but the 24V has small-ass leads (10-12AWG ?) coming out of the case..

I want to keep these tamper-proof as possible, but was wondering if a car charger would work..

I'm assuming the answer is yes, but just wanted to make sure, since I don't want these going kablooey!

In addition, could I use a basic, Bantam BC6 charger on the 24V?
Wouldn't the charger only pull the voltage that it needs? (between 11.5 and 14V)

I don't know that your charger could handle 24V input, you may want to look that up.

Charging a 12V 7Ah battery shouldn't take that long. That's about the same as a 3s 7000mah, so even if your charger is only capable of 50W that should still take less than 2 hours. However on the flip side it won't run your charger for long either, probably about 1 battery pack.

How are you getting to the park? If one of your friends is driving pop the hood and charge off the car battery. You can charge many packs before you need to worry about killing the car battery

Says Operating Voltage of 11-18V.. I'd assume no eh?
Damn, what if my buddy and I used two chargers.. splitting the 24V into two?
Not sure if it works that way though..

Yeah, I may just end up doing that..

If I were to bring the 12V 7Ah, I'd probably end up using it only for our plane stuff, where things are ~800-1500 packs, so they'd be pretty good..

He's getting dropped off, and I'm driving up, but my brother will be taking the car after..

Your theory of running two chargers off the 24V battery doesn't work! Your parralleling the chargers off the battery. What do we all know about series and parrallel? Parrallel only changes runtime, in this case it would decrease runtime. Voltage would remain the same and therefor you would fry your chargers

Yeah, that's what I figured, haha..

Now... series wouldn't work either eh?

Wouldn't like to try it myself- there would be too many issues with voltage droop or voltage difference when trying to run one or both chargers, especially when you put a load on either or both chargers..

I second the idea of just running the chargers from a vehicle battery, will last much longer and be hassle-free by comparison.

what I have for days like this is a deep cycle marine battery....24"x12x12. Once it is fullly charged, it will take whatever I throw at it all day. Only down side is it weighs almost 100 lbs. I even have access to a Rex which has 2 batts that is even bigger and weighs 300lbs each

2. MBX-5T 1520, MMM ON 5S
3. MBX-5 ONROAD CONVERSION 1515, MMM ON 5S
4. MRX-3 ON ROAD CONVERSION 1512, MMM ON 6S
5. TEN T 2650 T8, MMP ON 3S
